Would it be possible to add a external speaker jack to the MustangIII?

There are a couple of posters here who have modded the smaller Mustangs to add a jack socket on the back to connect the amp to an external speaker cab, apparently with very good sounding results.

The I and II have a cabinet back panel on which a jack socket can readily be mounted, (although getting the panel off to do the job would need care, as it's glued in).

Not sure how it would work in practical terms with the III's open back cabinet, but I'm sure something could be devised.

That sort of mod presumably voids the warranty (unless maybe it could be 'invisibly' reversed). Maybe not such an issue on a $100 Mustang I, but perhaps something to think hard about before modding the bigger, pricier Mustangs.

The internal speaker would typically be disconnected when the external cab is connected otherwise the mod is more awkward re impedence switching. I've 'spoken' with Fender re an extn cab out needed on the MIII and the lack of this was why I didn't keep it.

Whilst it's a brilliant all-in one portable package, I couldn't connect it to a 2x12 or 4x12 if I needed to. For me, the whole point of buying it would be to have a smaller, lighter weight alternative to my Valvetronix AD120VTX that I could use at home, rehearsals & gigs if needed - without the extn cab out it would have been too restrictive. In addition to the cost of paying a tech to do the mod as has been mentioned it would almost certainly void the warranty, so sadly it was a no go for me. Real shame, because I really liked it.

The cost of this mod at manufacturing stage would be minimal & I for one would be more than happy to pay an extra £10 or so to have this in future models. If Fender add this, I'd buy it again!

Rich

Really, all you'd have to do is get a little 1/4" jack from Radio Shack or somewhere, solder two wires of about a couple of feet in length to it, and crimp two terminals to the other ends. When you want to use an external cab, just pull the terminals off the internal speaker (mine were not soldered on so I assume they are all like this), and connect them to your new adapter. Not pretty, but all reversible, and you can keep it in the back of the amp when you're not using it.

Just watch out for impedance mismatch. A 2x12 cab with 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel will give you 4 ohms and will probably eventually blow the amp. If you wire them in series you will get 16 ohms and may be able to get away with that, but the volume will be slightly lower.

You also need to watch the wattage rating of the speaker, since the MIII is a 100 watt amp.

I realize this is an old topic, but I just recently acquired a Mustang III amp.

I was just looking at the schematic and the amp uses an NXP TDA8950 power amplifier which is rated to operate down to 4ohm. Assuming the amp has an 8ohm speaker (I don't have the amp in front of me ATM), one could safely connect another 8ohm speaker in parallel (i.e. extension cabinet).

According to the datasheet (http://www.nxp.com/docs/en/data-sheet/TDA8950.pdf), the chip will provide up to 150W at 4ohm in single ended configuration (which is what is used in the mustang III).

The mustang IV and V use the second integrated power amp in the chip to provide stereo operation.
