I've played with the Mustang 1 for about a week, and it seems to have some possibilities for sounding good. But I'm wondering if that might be achieved by replacing the original speaker. I'm playing with a nice stock early 70s strat, but can't get nice, clear high end bite when I dig into a lead tone (Think David Gilmour). It seems to be rather muddy--sometimes in a good way--but overall the notes tend to dull. Also, I would like to see more clean (versus distorted) sustain which I was able to get on my old LAB SERIES L5 amp before it fell apart. Does anyone have input on whether any of this can be helped with a different speaker, or perhaps there's a setting I haven't found? Thx

Hi, mccloud98.

Here's a preset I created called "The Wall" - you can download it at the Fuse website https://fuse.fender.com/preset.php/orcatraz-the-wall. See if it works for you.

Thank you for responding, Orcatraz. I've tried a couple times using your link but it just ends up at an overview page for presets. Once there I tried to search by title "Wall", "The Wall", and by your name (author), with no luck. I'm new to this forum so maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Thx

Huh? That's strange. When I click on the link, it takes me straight to the preset. The only thing is that I have to be logged on to be able to download the preset.
Are you a member at the Fuse website?

To answer your original question, I personally am not impressed with the stock speaker on the MI. I finally took the plunge a few weeks ago and voided the warranty and installed an external speaker jack and the improvement in tone is astounding!

I've got three different cabs I've used with it, a 2x12 with Greenbacks, a 1x12 with a Warehouse ET-65 (clone of Celestion G12-65) and a 1x12 with a Weber 12F150 (Fender Deluxe Reverb replacement). It sounds really good with any of these! The most dramatic improvement seems to be with the Deluxe Reverb model...it's just awesome like this, whereas it's a little disappointing with the stock speaker. However, all models benefit from this, and the improvement is pretty dramatic for the higher gain models, too.

I've contemplated putting a different internal speaker in the amp itself, but I'm not sure how much of the improved tone is due to the 12" speaker...I'm a little afraid that even a good 8" speaker won't sound nearly as good as the 12". However, using an external cab really affects the portability factor of this small amp. As it is, I can go jam with a friend with the amp in one hand and my guitar in the other! Very nice! An external cab means making a second trip! So I may try a new 8" here one day.

Thanks for your great response Muleya. The fact that you have noticed a "dramatic", rather than so-so, improvement is very encouraging. I'm surprised the 20 watts can get a good result from your 2X12s.

You're still able to run with the built in 8" if you wish after the modification?

20W is plenty for a 2x12, even for a 4x12. I have a 10W tube amp I built that I play through the 2x12 that sounds great...plenty of volume...it would easily power a 4x12, too!

Yes, I installed a plug that automatically disconnects the internal speaker when you plug into it. When you pull the plug out, the internal speaker comes back on. Someone else here posted that and I must say it works very nicely! I bought a round jack-plate and drilled a hole in the back to mount the jack...in the end it looks very clean and works like a charm! The hardest part was getting the back off...it was glued in places!

And of course, I can still replace the internal speaker if I ever decide to do so.

I'm not one who easily suggests modding an amp, especially when it involves voiding a warranty, but if you really want to hear what the Mustang can do, you really need to run it through a good speaker.

I'm hearin' that. Given the tone that comes through the headphones, this makes sense. You got me thinkin'.......

You can also run your mustang I into a power amp(p.a. type)or a larger combo amp and or amp head of your choice, just run a cable from the headphone out of your mustang to the aux in on the other amp if it has one or use a 1/8" stereo to 1/4" dual mono cable into the clean channel or effects return of another amp, this setup will also sound good with your mustang.

Hmmm...that's an interesting idea that I hadn't thought of....going to have to try that, running it into my Marshall JVM.

Thanks to all for some great and useful responses! I still have had no luck in accessing the "Wall" preset when I click the link. I sent a message to the webmaster about this, but no response. Does anyone else have difficulty in getting to the Wall preset offered by Orcatraz earlier in this thread?

Hi mccloud98
To get his link to work I think you will need to be logged in to your Fuse account in a browser window, then try it.
If you did not create a Fuse account, you need to.
Hope that helps.

Yes, I am registered with FUSE.....forgot to mention that. I just now tried again (with the FUSE site logged in on a second browser window). I get a page headlined "latest presets", of which there are pages and pages. I've also tried searching by author and name. The most I have gotten is one preset called "Tool". Searching by other search words yielded no results as I recall. Are you getting straight to the preset?

Here it is from earlier in the thread:
https://fuse.fender.com/preset.php/orcatraz-the-wall

Thanks for your concern.

Ok, this gets a little tricky due to the web page structure. Let's not waste time with web page php theory.... I only get this to work using a center mouse click after I am logged in to another window and other settings in Explorer set to its liking- no I am not gettting into that any further....

Sooooooooooo let's just go for the neck and you will find it easier to do this I think.

Login to Fuse (another tab in the same browser window will work too)

Make sure at the top you have selected Mustang amps (upper right corner)

Then go down below the GDec photos and use the grey search bar like this--
Choose Author, Ascending, Orcatraz, do not check Fender box

The list of his presets will come up.
It is a database search and we need to be very specific to use it or no go. :?
