Does anyone know of a guide to Ableton in plain, non-computoid language? Their manual is too cryptic for me. I tried incense, incantations, and a crystal ball already to force it to give up its secrets but nothing materialized in the pentagram.

There are a ton of tutorials on the Ableton site. They start very basic. I was really confused by it too when i started but after going through just one tutorial and building a song, i understood the overall paradigm, which made all the details fall into place.

Aren't there also built-in tutorials in Live? Turning the "help" on will give you tool-tips for all the interface items too.

After you exhaust all of those, search YouTube, there are tons more!

As far as I can tell, it's just has a hard to use interface. Even after I learned how to do some basic recording with it, if some time passes between uses I have to relearn it when I come back to it.

It seems pretty powerful though, even in its' watered down mode.

I sat down with it last night after giving up initially. There is a tutorial that pops up on the right hand side on recording your first song. Just follow through that, it's about 14 steps if I remember right. It tells you exactly what buttons to click on and will have you record a simple track. Don't jump ahead and try and click the record button thinking thats how you record, because it isn't. You have to arm the track for recording, then arm the record button itself, then click play to begin recording the track as it plays.

It's really odd, but the tutorial works, and I found the software is really quite nice now. I'm really happy they included it!
