Hey guys,

I just ordered my Mustang V head and cab! Here's my problem: I have a 3rd floor apartment for when I'm at college and then I have my parents basement when I'm at home. I want to leave the cabinet at home in the basement because that's where I can crank it up! Can't at the apartment. And I don't want to lug it back and forth. So I've done some research (A LOT actually) and I can't find a definite answer to whether or not I can run this head unit with NO speakers attached at all. I have read mixed answers and I can't just TEST it and risk killing the head. Please someone help, all I want to do is carry the head back and forth. Keep in mind that sometimes the head will be powered ON with nothing attached, no speakers, no headphones, nothing at all, at least that could happen. Will it work this way with no damage whatsoever?

Also, I DO have a shelf stereo system at the apartment (you know, just a stereo with those little speakers, nothing guitar/amp related). It has an audio IN jack. Can I run a cord from the 1/8" OUT on the head to the 1/8" IN on the stereo so I can play quietly?

Thanks for the help!

You only need a speaker load with valve amps - this is not needed with solid-state/digital signal processing amps so you can use your M5 head via headphones quite safely. That's why the headphone out is there. Even with speakers connected the headphone disconnects these anyway. This flexibility plus the ability to play with good tone at low volumes even through speakers is one of the big advantages of modeling gear over valve amps.

And the headphone out can be used to go through small powered speakers (which is in the manual btw).

Thanks for the reply.

So what happens if i'm connected via headphones, and they get pulled out of the amp head - meaning the bypass that occurs when the headphones are plugged in is no longer activated? It would be trying to play through speakers that aren't there. Is that bad for it?

It will be totally fine, I do it all the time.

The only ways you can ruin this specific amp is run either of the channels lower than 8 ohms, or join the two channels together.

It's fine, chill :D

Hey bretwomack,

The information given is all correct. You can play using only headphones. It's pretty much a non-issue. You can also use to headphone jack to send to powered speakers.

But NOT the other way round, unless you want a fried power section and hot ears
