I have a Mustang II, and am really impressed with it. However, I am looking at the III and the IV because of the better display, extra presets, footswitch the ease of working with the effects on the amp.

Since both amps have Celestions, am I getting the same sound with either one? Or, is the stereo in the IV worth the extra cash and weight?

I went into the local music store interested in the III or the IV. Price difference or stereo feature didn't much figure into my decision. I was concerned about the weight, 36 vs. 47, and told myself I was going to have to be blown away by the difference in tone. I really wanted to walk away with the III. Lighter, smaller, etc. An A/B test made it all too plain for me - I had to get the IV, no contest. It simply moves more air and "oomph". If you gig at all, you have to at least compare the two before buying. I've had no regrets, even when hauling it out of the car to the stage....

I didn't do an A/B test, but I did get the IV. I was thinking of the III as well because of the weight. I am in no way sorry I got the IV. It is a great sounding amp and I have gotten several compliments as to how good it sounds. If you get it you won't be sorry either.

If I was back in the market for one, I'd probably go Mustang V as I already have a Vox AD212 stereo cab (& speaker cables) that would be perfect for it - much easier to carry in two bits as it were - or just the head if there was a decent cab already there.

Mind you, 47lbs is actually lighter than my Laney VC30-210 (48lbs) and way lighter than my AD120VTX (58lbs). The Fender 4-button is also only a fraction of the weight/size of my Vox VC12 controller. Hmmm - tempting, but the other problem is physical size and lack of space at home for another big 2x12 combo.

I have a IV and my friend has a III. We have played together several times using identical presets and both amps sound awesome. When compared side by side, the IV seems to have a fuller sound with more bottom end. The stereo isn't that noticeable, but the IV does seem to have a slightly richer tone. They both are loud and you can't go wrong with either model.

I went with the IV because I wasn't as concerned about the weight and I had the extra money to spend. Likewise, my friend went with the III because he wanted the lighter model and didn't have the extra cash to shell out.

So, IMHO, if you have the money and weight isn't a concern go with the IV (or V) since the tone is a touch fuller with more bottom end and more air movement (plus you get stereo if that is a factor). If you want better portability, are more price conscious and will be mainly mic'ing into a PA for gigs, then the III is for you.

Hope that helps.

Don't get either until Fender addresses the problem that they are having with them. Many people are getting crappy amps that are unusable in a live or studio setting, and just annoying for practicing. Check out the other threads. Don't buy until it's figured out.

Hi,
Where a re the threads about the mustang amp problems,
It seems to me that they must only be a very small minority as not a lot of users on here are complaining about these amps? there is however a lot of praise for them as i have the mustang Iv and sounds really great.
any one with me on this?
Cheers
John

I have read the threads about all of the "fizzing" and etc; I have had my Mustang II since Oct 2010, and have yet to hear any problems.
I've tried out a couple of Mustang IIIs, and haven't heard any problems with them either. Perhaps I've just been lucky, or maybe my ears are too far gone to hear the trouble. Or, the folks who are having all the problems are extremely picky.
If there had been any issues, I wouldn't be considering getting another one!

Ok, I've read more of the threads about what is happening with the strange sounds. It appears that the problems are with the III, IV or V, not the I and II. Since I have a II, I haven't experienced what others have.
If I decide to make the jump, I'll make sure to be careful when I try out a Mustang II or IV.

I have a mustang III and am pretty happy with it- and due to an older mac, can't update the firmware. I've chosen to ignore the sonic weirdness some are so bothered by. Honestly, alot of it can be overcome by tweaking the amps presets and making use of your guitars volume and tone knobs. As I've stated on various threads in the past... the worst tone out of my MIII is better than the best tone I could get out of the Frontman amp I traded in on it.

I opted for the MII originally because it was pretty portable and sounded pretty good to my ear-still does. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase one if I were you, if you get a dud and purchased it someplace reputable, you can always return it if it doesn't meet your expectations. They are great amps for what they cost.

+1 on baerashbrewer's comment. @CharlesTY the II's don't have the issue which is you haven't heard the issue. Wait until Fender fixes the amps to upgrade.

I bought one of the Mustang V rigs when they first came out - had to get the 4-12 cabinet at GC (wasn't in stock on MF) and I bought the head on MF as they didn't have one in stock at the local GC. Once I got them both together and hooked up I played the hell of the amp and never had an ounce of trouble of any kind - still haven't months later.

If you can ignore it, you don't have it. Go to the forum and check out the sound clips. My girlfriend, and two other friends, who are not musicians noticed it so separate occasions within two seconds of my playing without being told about it. This is before I started "complaining."

Is this being too picky?
