Hi Guys
Am I right in thinking that you can dial up better professional sounding tones at a higher volume from your amp as apposed to lower volume as i cannot play too loud because of neighbours etc but the sounds i do get at low volumes are good but i wonder if i play the amp loud then the tones will be better.
How loud do you play your amp and how do you get around playing your amp at high volumes? (dont your neighbours complain?)
Thanks in advance.

You do need to get the speakers moving and pushing air to get the best out of any amp, and that means playing it at a reasonable volume.

You also need to play the amp at a reasonable volume on a regular basis over the first couple of months to break the speakers in on a new amp - playing at low volumes doesn't do that because the cone isn't moving enough. When speakers are new, the cone material is fairly rigid and thus the frequency response and volume aren't at their peak yet. Regular movement of the cone loosens it up (ditto the magnet) so that it becomes more responsive and will go in/out further - thus giving a better range of frequency response, smoother tone, and even a little more volume.

The importance of breaking in speakers shouldn't be underestimated - the difference in tone between a new amp and one that's been properly played in over a couple of months can be quite marked and make them sound and feel quite different. Which is why I always advise folk who might initially be disappointed with the tone from their new amp to give the amp a chance and to let the speaker break in properly before rushing out to change the speaker.

Rich

Rockcat makes all the sense in the world. I'll play my Mustang IV at home around 3 but gig at 4. I think really if your neighbors or family are going to complain you just need to point them to this thread and explain you are trying to do the right thing :)
