I have both amps. I really like the MIII for the cleaner blackface tones. But I get better driven tones with the SCXD. Anyone else notice this?

For example, set up the Tweed Champ to an overdrive tone on the MIII. Then set up the SCXD voice 3 patch with gain around 3-4 and volume to taste.

The upper-mids and highs on the MIII are fizzier, buzzier, and just more harsh. With the SCXD, they are smoother and more tubelike. I wish the MIII had the smoother highs and upper-mids of the SC on higher gain settings. They are really quite different.

Got both. Got the SCXD first had for about a year and half. Got a MII and the trade up to a MIII. SCXD hasn't been played since will soon be sold. I don't play high gain stuff. Blues and overdriven stuff. The MIII is just way above the SCXD on tone to me. Play with the sag and bias settings, will smooth out some of the gritty you are hearing.

I have a Super Champ XD, a Mustang II and a Mustang V. I play 'em all. Sometimes I play them all the same day. I'm keeping them all.

Bottom line is: I can get awesome DRRI-esque tones out the SCXD I can't get out of the III. True tube tones. All my axes sound great with it.

The III is much pickier about which guitars it likes. But its versatility is sick. The EFX are sick. I can find a vast wealth of guitar/amp combinations in there that all sound terrific.

With the III it's much more laser-focused: This setting gets me a great rhythm tone with this axe. This setting a great blues lead with this axe/pickup. With the III you have to go after the specific use more. But it's very rewarding when you do.

With the SCXD, you just crank it on Ch. 1, set Ch. 4 for leads and fahgedaboudit. Use your guitar's volume pot. I like a little reverb and delay mix. It's all good.

If the SCXD had a 12"................................... :D

I loved it when I first had it, but just sounds a little boxy now sitting next to my Stang3.

The III does have a nice fat, clean bottom end for its size and weight. That means a good match between cab and speaker. Classic 12" contrasts would be the BJ and the BD. BJ being hopelessly boxy in that tiny cab, the BD having a nice speaker/cab match (slightly oversized cab) that produces a lovely full low end. The III reminds of the BD's phat low end.

Did some studio time last weekend and used the studio Marshall 12" combo. Did not like. Took my Stang3 tonight. Had dialed in 3 presets, 1 Twin 2 65 Deluxe. Did two blues songs tonight and stayed on a 65 Deluxe with just a hair of boost on the compressor which I used as a stompbox on the footswitch.

Nice clean blues tone full bottom and nice clean highs that dug in when played hard. SCXD never sounded this full.

I just picked up a III this week and I'm thinking when I get a chance I'm going to run the line out from the SCXD to the return of the Mustang and see what she'll do.

I have both. Picked up the SCXD first, and then a week later got the Mustang III.

The only complaint I have about the Mustang III is the bad tolex job - I've probably gigged both amps about the same, but the funky "carbon fiber" tolex on the Mustang III is starting to come unglued. NONE of my other amps have ever done this (tears and rips are one thing, but coming unglued?).

Love the tone with both - especially after I biased the SCXD. Although I usually am on Channel 1, I've figured out that Channel 2 - Voice 16 is not really an amp model of an acoustic guitar amp as much as a modeler for an acoustic guitar (much like the Boss Acoustic Guitar simulator pedal). Plugging my Tele or Strat and setting the Voice to 16, gave me the same acoustic guitar simulation that the pedal did. One less pedal to bring out!!! LOL

As for the Mustang III - just a lot of versatility - and I usually just use a couple of the presets only!
