Well, this is probably as close as I'll ever get considering I'm playing a strat through a $200.00 Mustang II. It's not perfect, but what is? Ehh.. I'm happy with it. Check it out.

Sounds nice (And some great licks, too!)
But I am not familiar with a Dumble amp. I must have missed that one.
Details please? It sort of sounds like a low power class A. Am I close?

I played those licks but they're not mine, they're Robben Ford's - thanks anyway.

Definitely not low wattage. Here is some info about the amps - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dumble_Amplifiers

Great sound and playing! Did you upload that preset to FUSE? :)

Great sound and licks. Robben and Larry C. are two of my heros. Love to have the patch if you will share. I use an Ethos pedal (dumble want to be) and a Carvan Stereo 100 Tube amp through a custom 2/12 EV12M-L cab. As close as I can get! Butyour patch is VERY close and a lot of $$$$ less. I'm using the MV Head through the same cabinet and the sounds are fantastic.

Let me know if you would like to swap some Robben and/or Larry C backing tracks - tab or MP3.s Bo

Thanks, Bob and Gary.

I have not posted it to Fuse yet but I will... maybe sometime next week. Just remember though, I'm using a Strat and the patch is geared towards it. If you're planning on using a humbucker you may need to reduce the gain on the Overdrive.

If you're impatient, the patch itself is not very complicated so you can try this. Use the Twin model, crank its gain, add the Overdrive module in the "Post" position and set its gain to nearly full up. Putting the Overdrive in the "Post" position is very important for getting this sound because in the "Pre" setting, it's way too buzzy. There's a bit of a hair trigger at the upper reaches of the gain knob of the Overdrive module. You'll of course have to adjust the tone controls in both the Twin and the Overdrive for your pickups and natural guitar tone. It's kinda cool in how the two sets of tone controls interact with each other. I don't have a whole lot of treble in either one - the Twin is at about 4 and the Overdrive is right in the middle. The Mid controls are especially effective in really shaping the sound so concentrate on those as well. They each have noticeably different frequency centers which really helps for tone shaping.

Then there's the Sag control. I have to crank it to get the right kind of compression and feel for my Strat's pickups - they're not very hot but I love their tone. You'll have to choose how much or how little Sag you need for your instrument.
Thanks again.

Very Stevie Ray Vaughanish, nice sound, nice playing and nice feel.
So how did you come to emulate a Dumble and what did you use as reference?

Thanks, Henky!

I've always loved Robben Ford's sound and have tried to emulate it on many different amps and modelers. I saw an interview of Robben on Youtube (on an Italian TV station of all things) where he talked about the Dumble and how it was based on a Fender Twin. That gave me the idea to try copping it on the Mustang. Its Twin emulation is pretty darn good. Certainly much better than anything else out there, IMHO. So, off I went and here it is.

One thing I discovered about myself is that while I love my semi-hollow electric for the jazzy stuff, I'm really more comfortable playing all the other styles I like to play, on a Strat. Also, I just really like the way the Strat pairs with the Mustang so much better than other guitars - especially humbucker equipped guitars. That made emulating Mr. Ford's sound a bit more challenging. This is as close to that sound as I've ever gotten and I'm pretty happy about that. Kudos to Fender and their amp modeling!
Cheers.

Wow, you have an Ethos pedal? I've been gassing for one of those for a few months now. I'd be interesting to do an A/B with it and the Mustang preset I made.

Sure send me the patch in an email or post it on the Fender site. The thing is - the Dumble is known for its ability to produce clean tones with a light string touch and more and more OD as you dig into the strings. The ETHOS does a good job of emulating this with the right TUBE power amp.

Using a OD pedal pretty much locks you into that level of OD. The best pedal I have to truly be analog OD with a great touch sensitivity is the Fullerton OCD - it has some great sounds and works great with a tube amp and does a good job IN FRONT of the Mustang V Head.

Nice playing and a really good effort at getting Dumble tone.

Here are some real Dumble clips:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9U1mrbqyEyw

And here are 4 in depth analysis vids of the Dumble Overdrive special - arguably the most reverred of all guitar amps - the prices these things go for is astronomic - but the TONE...oooohhh aaaahhhh:

Part 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34Y3lHpKXWY

Part 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNSAj6Az ... re=related

Part 3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qvMwCte ... re=related

Part 4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGPxrt7d ... re=related

I'm lucky enough to have the Dumble Overdrive special modeled in my Vox AD120VTX and (whilst nothing can sound quite like the original) this is probably the best modeling of a Dumble I've heard - & if you listen to the vids you'll see why I love this model soooo much - because short of laying out $40-150,000 I reckon it's the closest I'm gonna ever get to owning a real one.

Thanks, Rockcat.

Yeah, I watched all those vids before too but I can't really go by them because I've been going for a specific type of Dumble sound - Robben Ford's. While the sounds on those vids are fine, they're not really what I'm after. There aren't many tone shaping options on the Mustangs so what I've been able to get is probably as good as it's ever going to get. There are also several controls on the real thing that simply do not exist on any of the Mustang's amp models and I wonder of they do on your Vox. This I think can be a major factor in getting the type of Dumble sounds one is after.

This, as I've mentioned before, is the closest I've ever gotten to the sound I've always wanted so I'm happy.

After watching the videos and doing some reading on the net, I have to agree that the Dumble is an awesome amp. $40,000 worth of awesome? I'm not sure. But awesome in any case. I sure would love to see it modeled in the Mustang! I would trade one of my other models for it, maybe even two, if I could choose which one.

Thanks, Rockcat.

After trying to work this out it seems this can only be done with the FUSE software huh? My older mac can't run it so I guess I'm outta luck. If only I could stop getting new guitars I could probably afford a new computer!
