Hey guys, this is my first ever post here.

I just got my Mustang V, very pleased with the cleans and overdrives.

I've downloaded lots of presets for it, which I like.

How do I get a good, clear distortion? The only sound I get from this amp is a noisy, mushy distortion.

Anybody?

Keep the volume level around 4 or so. Start with the gain that way as well. Set your guitar volume around halfway or 3/4. Use the master volume for how loud you want. This should give you a nice 'clean' distortion to start with. Then tinker from there with guitar volume knob first, then gain.

Many presets are all jacked up to 10 on this stuff, which makes them all sound muddy. The Mustang amps tend to be very input sensitive so start with halfway on most everything and work up from there.

I found that the default settings of some of the presets and amps is 10 - everything all out.
First thing I did on the presets I use was to go into the advanced controls and turn the master volume down. At that point you have some control and volume to actually adjust the gain/drive and volume control. Also, the older amp models have a lot more variation than some of the newer high gain models.

Try using the "tweed" models and drive them hard to get that nice compression

Good luck
Mike

I used to have original Marshall Plexi's, JTM45, and JCM800 and I can tell you that even with the real thing, if you over-crank the gain you can get a very mushy tone. The best distortions (especially crunch tones) are achieved by lowering the gain.

The most helpful thing I discovered for the high gain amp models was to reduce the Sag in FUSE...this made a huge difference! You'll find it in the Advanced Amp Controls. Then, as already suggested, reduce gain levels.

Also, for the American 90s, I found I get better sounds if I use an OD pedal in front of the amp, gain set around 2, level set around 7-8, then set bass low on the OD pedal's tone controls, mids higher and treble to taste. This will tighten up the loose, mushy low end.
