I went to GC yesterday to buy an M III and I just couldn't get myself to do it. There are too many reported issues and this series is getting some serious bad press. That combined with a deafening silence by Fender on the troubles has really turned me off. I will just hold my money in anticipation of some sort of announcement/acknowledgement that the issues are being actively addressed.
I know there are some amps out there that don't have issues, but I just can't justify spending the money on a roll of the dice to see if I get a bad one or a good one. At first it appeared that amps made in Nov 2010 were victims of this, but recently Feb 2011 amps were discovered to have issues as well.

I have a Mustang IV and haven't had any of the fuzz or distortion issues mentioned on this forum. Are all of these issues isolated to the Mustang III?? If so, why not try one of the other models?

Just a thought....

The good thing about GC is that you can take it back if you get a "bad" one. Plus if I were you I'd try the one you buy in the store before you leave.

yeah i feel the same way, was gonna try a mustang III out today, but im also turned off by the fact that there are bad ones out there :(
if its a design fault in just some units i think Fender should take responsibility, but i guess they are working on it. either way i will wait until Fender give us more info on what is causing the fizz in SOME units and not in others.

so the mustang IV and V is not fizzing? i guess we can rule out that the display is interfering then (or maybe its closer to something sensitive on the stang III)?

:?

Thanks for the suggestion kartes. I tried a Mustang II on the same day that I tried the III and I was sold on the LCD display that comes on the III and that it made changing models and effects so much easier. The M IV and V are currently out of my price range.

That is true about GC's return policy, tjinca1. I am a regular customer there and have used their liberal policy more times than I (and probably they) care to remember. I know that some are saying this was an issue right out of the box. I am just wondering if it could be something that also appears over time. I guess that remains to be seen.

I agree mastaman, it just makes sense to wait.

I am not sure if this is affecting the models past III, but it might be a subtle design difference.

Have a II and a III. Zero issues. I have no idea what these guys are talking about. Awesome products. Who needs tubes?

I have a II and a V and I have had zero problems of any kind. I play them both all the time and gig out frequently with the II. I think unhappy people post a lot more than those of us who have no issues with these amps.

CRGuitarMan,nice collection of amps! is that a peavey vypyr in your photo on the left side on the bottom next to your guitar on the stand?if it is how would you rate it compared to your mustangs?i have the mustang I and V and also the peavey vypyr 15 and 30w but i do like my mustang V better then my vypyr 30 and i like my mustang I a little better then my vypyr 15 because the fender clean amp models in my mustang I sound better then the vypyrs clean fender models.

I was holding out too--because of the fizz issue, and the lack of an external speaker jack on the Mustang III.

What changed my mind was that you get so much for $299, it's worth the gamble, and you just know that this price is not going to last forever. I figured I can always add my own external jack later.

The first thing I did when I got it was upgrade the software, so I don't know if I ever had the fizz, but I certainly don't have it now.

This amp is incredible, and for what you get, the price is unbelievable.

thats nice to hear. there is hope! :)
have you tried it on louder sound levels (4-7 on the volume)?
what is the prod date on your new stang III?
maybe i should not fuzz about the fizz on a $299 amp (but in thailand its about $420 :( ) ...for sure i do not expect crisp tube sound...it just makes me a little confused when some report that they had a fizzy mustang III but replaced it for a non fizzy one :?
i will have a listen for my self at the local dealer on monday and stop "fizzing" around on this forum.

Problems have been reported on the III, IV, and V. Pretty much any of them with LCD screens.

The date of manufacture on my amp is 11/20/10, and for the life of me I cannot seem to create the fizz or tail-end distortion sound. I've listened to clips of it that people have posted. I must be doing something wrong. Could someone give me the settings on which it is heard, including volume settings? I only use the clean settings so maybe I'm not listening in the right place.

The only thing I hear so far is a little harshness in the speaker, which in my experience usually goes away as the speaker breaks in.

@ cormorant

If ya wanna make sure ya hear it just listen to any clean preset without effects ... other settings aren't critical in my experience ... if you have the fizzy thing it'll jump right out. It's easiest heard on note decay on the lower strings. In my case I heard it on all strings ... attack to delay ... both clean presets and dirty presets. I have an MII.
