AHA! What about this little riddle?

How come when I hook my MP3 player up to it there is no noise? It must have to be strictly in the modeling area. That is not to say that it has to do with the LCD screen, but still, little fishy?
Yes it is in the modelling area. That sound is the squaring off of waveforms which i think is a lack of proper filtering or poor power.

BTW great playing and sound in your clip. The amp sounds SO good. Seriously. I mean if the fizz didn't exist: what a great amp! What guitar?

Does that mean you are experiencing a different noise or no noise at all?

MIII owner here. I love the amp but I am having the same "fizz" as in the recordings in this thread. I am taking my amp tomorrow to Austin to a Fender authorized warranty shop (Austin Amps) to see if they can fix it. I am not hopeful but this is what Fender Customer Service told me to do.
I am able to use the amp now by using an external power amp (that was previously used for near field monitors).
Guitar > MIII > send to power amp > back to MIII speaker. This bypasses the MIII power section completely. Works great, no fizz and the patches work normally.
I have verified that there are no issues with the speaker, cabinet or guitar. When I spoke with the Fender c/s rep he said they know of the problem and are working on it. He took my e-mail address and said I would be notified when, etc, etc...

You're our man Mark. Let us know what happens. And thank you for letting us know about the power amp. It can't be a power issue with the DSP now. My bet is on the LCD screen now. I'll add this to the sum of info on my previous post.

Thanks Again

Baer

The Following is a repost with updates:

I am just going to sum up what has been discussed and found:

EDIT: Here is the sound that I recorded. http://soundcloud.com/user4316001/musta ... range-fizz

EDIT: A poster verified that running through an external power amp removes the fizz.

"I am able to use the amp now by using an external power amp (that was previously used for near field monitors). Guitar > MIII > send to power amp > back to MIII speaker. This bypasses the MIII power section completely. Works great, no fizz and the patches work normally. "

Tried the following:

Surge Protectors
Surge Suppressors
APC UPS units
Power Conditioners
Attaching an external speaker cab
Moving to different buildings/different rooms
EDIT: No fizz coming from AUX source (MP3 player, etc)

Possibilities:

LCD Screen
Shielding
Firmware issue
Power Quality
Power Rating

Other issues:

Noticeable by non-musicians (not "looking for it")
Not the same as other thread: "Tail-End Distortion"
Not on all amps
Been noted that happens on Mustang III, IV, and V
Issues have been recorded internationally
Reviews have been submitted on Musicians Friend and Sweetwater acknowledging the issue
Strangely all reviews have been removed from Musicians Friend

I am going to try to make a new recording soon. I'll post it hear soon.

I'm so glad someone else's had this problem. I got the III two days ago and I've just started to notice this, 'specially when distorted. I really hope they are working on a solution, because otherwise this amp sounds excellent. :?

Sure it can. Since you are removing the power amp of the Mustang from the system, there is less draw (just like when you use headphones and USB). I still think it is power quality related, possibly tied to the LCD.

why not return it and get the Mustang II?
I originally wanted the II for the size and wattage, but decided on the III for a few reasons:
1. Open back cabinet. This is a big deal.
2. Dedicated "normal" amp controls including reverb. You have to pre-program the II for a few settings that you can easily access on the III.

Same here. The FX Loop is nice bonus to.

That would imply that the power supply in the MIII is not up to the task of providing the required power to the entire system. If this were the case, all MIII should suffer the same malady. They don't. I think it is more likely that the power amp in some Mustangs were built with sub-par components - perhaps the power transistors. Kudos to Mark for sussing it out on his amp. Now let's hope that everybody with an MIII can confirm this.

Hey, do you think it's worth returning my amp for a new one and hope I get lucky? Or should I keep it and wait for a solution?

Yes, but what's the point if the overall sound is tainted by the fizz?
Actually, you can control the reverb quite a bit via the front panel. Hold down the "exit" button to adjust the mix. The only thing I wish the MII had is the midrange control.

I think it's worth a try. If it in fact proves to be the power amp section, the only fix is to replace that module. It cannot be fixed with a firmware upgrade. If the components in the affected amps are indeed faulty, further use will only increase the chances of the power amp failing completely.

Nothing, which is why i returned my III hoping to hear about a fix. I don't see a need to settle for fizz or an inferior sound. (thanks for the control tips. that does help a little)
