I knew it was a bad idea to get this amp. I have a '72 LP and '66 ES-335 and now I have to invest in a Fender guitar to know if I'm hearing everything the Mustang was designed to deliver. So guys and gals (you're not going to catch me on that one), which ax do you like best with the Mustang?

My baja tele gets played a lot, but usually the guitar that I'm playing suits me just fine.

The Mustang was NOT designed for only Fender guitars. Some users think a humbucker equipped guitar sounds better than a single coil guitar on the Mustang. The best thing about the Mustang is you can tweak the settings to work best with the Guitar YOU have.
but a Fender Guitar would go good in your collection. 8)

There are two things that will make your presets sound better in almost all cases:

1) Turn the Gain down

2) Turn the Sag down

See the manual if you're not sure how to do this.

Also, lower or turn off effects.

Have fun,
Bob

I agree with Bob, this and other recent posts seem to show that the Mustangs should have been loaded with clean presets of the different models as a default, so that folks can get used to setting thier own tone, before having to deal with effects etc.

My Aslin-Dane 335-clone sounds awesome through this amp, so a 335 should also. You just can't sit back and use the awful presets as the arbiter of taste.

I recommend starting with the many community presets on FUSE. Way better than anything in the default on-board presets. If you can't make your 335 sound awesome with one of them, sell the axe, not the amp.

There are ok basic uncolored presets from around 90-100, but they're so dead and dry before you add space to em they may turn you off.

Or change the pickups like I did in my pawn shop Epiphone SG. Took out muddy stock pickups and replaced with GFS Memphis Retrotrons. Now it's my favorite guitar, next to the band's Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Top. (Hard to believe I didn't like anything but Fender guitars before!)

MIII is very particular about pickups. It hates my RGX A2 alnico soapbars. Too tinny and bright for the amp. But it loves most of my other axes.

Take it back to the shop where you bought it and plug some other guitars in it, if you still feel the same way just return it.

One of the first things I did with my MIV was hook up to fuse and headphones. Pick an amp model that I like "65 Deluxe" then started tweaking the knobs using the computer played around with the various stompboxes and effects. I will agree out of the box I didn't care for many of the presets and have downloaded many killer presets from the Fuse Forum. But I have not overwrote any of the presets yet because I still play mostly hooked up to the computer and use headphones so I don't disturb my wife "the amps in the living room with the TV" I have written and saved presets on the computer and will soon transfer them to the amp. I really think you can get any sound you want with this amp just take your time and enjoy the trip.

SG, Strat, electro-acoustic all work with appropriate presets and gain tweaks.
Boss Looper is what gave me the most troubles getting settings it would worked well with and not just outright distort, but it was possible to find them.

I frequently use my Mustang II when practicing in the Music Room, running it on one side of an A-B-Y switch when I need distortion or just higher gain on clean sounds. I've used a wide assortment of guitars with it, including Strats, Teles, an Epi SG, a vintage Yamaha SG-200, an Xaviere Tele clone, one of my old vintage Electras and a brand new Epi Nighthawk.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this amp, though I did swap a number of presets to those here on the Fender web site - I think a large percentage of the stock presets on the Mustangs (I also own a Mustang V stack) and on the new G-DEC 3 Thirty amps leave a whole lot to be desired. Kick out the bad ones and load new ones or do some tweaking. There's no limit to what you can do or the tones you can get.

Schecter C-1 hellraiser which uses EMG pickups. I run 9V and 24V batteries which results in markedly different tones. Admittedly, getting cleaner tone has been a bit more of a challenge but that, again, is due to the guitar and not spending enough time nailing tones before I went fiddling with Ableton recording.

So many things to do .. so little time.

Thanks for all the info, suggestions and opinions (yes, I have tweaked my all presets yet again, and they are even better than before!).

Sorry that my sarcasm confused the issue a little (I will learn not to post while drinking - just not this time), but I do love this amp. I have gotten a lot of great tones out of it but I was surprised at how many amp models I could not get a clean setting for with humbuckings. I'm a little ashamed to admit I don't own a single-coil (the only vintage guitar I ever let go was a LP Jr - what was I thinking???). That's what prompted my original question on guitar choice.

tscoolberth hit it dead on, but I paraphrase: So little time, so many presets to tweak...

I use mainly humbuckers with my MIV. I have a couple of Strats, but I prefer a thicker sound of a HB equipped guitar. I had problems at first getting some decent clean tones. I found the '65 Twin gave me the best results for clean, but I needed to turn the gain down. Now I'm getting some great clean tones out of it.
