Hi

I wanted to know if I can disconnect one of the Mustang IV's speakers. Reason for doing this is that I was wondering if it would decrease the volume on the mustang IV, without damaging something on the amp. Even though I keep the volume just above 1 it is still a bit loud( my neighbours are starting to give me the stink eye everytime they see me). And the volume control on the mustang is very tempremantal in that it only starts making sound after you go past 1. And if I try turn back to decrease volume the volume levels jump around will turning it back. Its sometimes goes louder then on 2 when I try to turn back past one, strange I know.

I originally had the Mustang III but wanted a IV for the stereo effects loop. And I know I'll loose the stereo of the amp if I disconnect one speakern but this will only be at home, and when I'm with a band I'll reconnect it.

Any information would help a lot!

I wouldn't personally go that route. I'd plug in a simple volume pedal to lower the volume from the amp for home use - it will give you way more control.

Alternatively, use headphones for true stereo & keep your neighbours happy at the same time. You won't really hear stereo from the amps speakers - I'm afraid the tag 'stereo' is somewhat of a misnomer simply because the speakers are far too close together to discern any true stereo separation. Exactly the same with my stereo Vox Valvetronix AD120VTX.

Rich

I agree with Rockcat. A good pair of headphones will be the best way to go.

I agree with the headphones option too! However i've stumbled apon something interesting.
If i put a cable into one of the FX returns, but the cable is connected to nothing else, it cuts one speaker.

What i want to know is, will this in anyway harm the amp?

That's the same thing as connecting an external FX unit to the FX return. The FX return goes directly to the power amp section. If you connect something there, that cuts off the signal going to the power amp. I guess it's possible that if that loose connector touches something, the noise it creates could be loud. Other than that, I don't see a problem.

I assume your talking about the master volume?... there is also another volume knob beside the gain switch you can turn down. As well as the volume knob on your guitar... I "hate" playing through headphones. :D So if the above doesn't work... my vote is for the volume pedal...

Hi I use a stereo volume pedal with my Mustang IV and it works perfectly through the effects loop. You can crank the main volume up a bit then take the volume down again using the pedal. I use the Boss FV-500L stereo foot volume and it is much more sensitive than the master volume on the amp so for practising at home you can play at very low levels and still get a good sound.

Those are pricey!

Is there anything a bit cheaper would do the job? I could do with one of these myself......
