Hello friends,

Couple of days ago I bought fender american standard strat and fender mustang 2 amp. After plugging guitar in amp I noticed some noise (fizz). Switching to other presets didn't help - there still was fizz. Metal 2000, Super-Sonic and American 90s were producing more fizz then other presets.
Only when I decreased master volume of amp or guitar on 3 then I stopped to recognize fizz.
Also I noticed that switching pickup selector affected on level of the noise but a little bit.

I connected amp to laptop and upgraded to the latest firmware but it didn't help. Also I tried to connect guitar to amp with different cables (default fender and monster) and it didn't help. Moving amp in different place and using different power outlets didn't help.

Guys, any advice?

Thanks a lot in advance.

This may not be your problem. But often is with strats...

Is this buzz and hum present when you are not sounding any notes? Is it reduced when pickups are in position 2 & 4 (neck-Middle & Midle-bridge) and more when in 1, 3 & 5 (single pickups alone)? If so, this is part of the noise common with a strat's unshielded pickups picking up electromagnetic radiation from flourescent lights, power supply transformers, TV's etc. in positions 2 & 4, the two pickups are wound electrically in phase, but magnetically out of phase so the noise cancels out. (I have an American Series strat, too) Single coil pickups are never going to be as quiet as humbuckers and other double coil pickups.

Use the noise gate function in FUSE to cut off the background noise. It is pretty effective. Also, many of the presets, especially the non-Fender amp models, have the input gain set WAY too high, which makes the pickup of this noise even worse. As you adjust the gain, it will improve noise pickup.

Also... are you using a properly grounded 3-wire outlet? (in US) It makes a big difference if the case is not properly grounded. Never use one of those 3-prong to 2-prong adaptors without grounding the 3rd pin. It is unsafe, and adds to the noise.

Hope this helps....or at least explains things. You may know all of these things already, but I wanted to cover as many bases as I could in one post.

Good luck.

It's absolutely correct.

It is great. Weird buzz has gone. Thanks a lot.

How to fix unshielded pickups problem (except suggested solution)? Do all strat users suffer from this?

Yes I am using US outlets.

nm9p, thanks for your help.

See link below for what I use to eliminate electronic noise with my G&L SC-3 (strat).

Hope that helps!

Not just strats... any single coil pickup suffers from this problem - that's what the "humbucker" was designed to address. However, you just don't get the same sound from a humbucker.

What's worse, the hotter the pickup, the louder the hum. As my handle implies, I'm a BIG P90's fan and they are far noisier than strat, tele and "lipstick" pickups.

A lot of players just deal with the problem via the methods outlined by nm9p or get a noise gate as bclarke675 suggests.

If you want to get fanatical about it, this artical describes the different methods - basically, you build a "Faraday cage" around the pickups (as much as possible any way) and provide a "star ground".

Prepare to spend some coin on having this done by a shop if your not the DIY type.

I myself, just deal with it as nm9p suggests - but then, my playing style doesn't lean towards a "clean" sound anyway...

The Mustang's noise gate in the "Advanced Amp" section is your friend.

Hello,

Not really related but worth mentioning:

I play a Fender Tele and was noticing static noise when running my finger across the pickguard. The issue turned out to be static electricity buildup on the pickguard.

The fix: A bounce dryer sheet! Yes, rubbing down the pick guard with a bounce dryer sheet removed the static buildup, plus the guitar now smells clean and fresh!

A Bounce dryer sheet. Very interesting Telehound. It makes sense that it would be effective, though.

p90sDude quotes a very good article on de-noising a strat or other guitar with single coil pickups. The "star ground" eliminates the dreaded ground loop that allows hum to infiltrate the system. This is also why many pro sound guys always use a "ground lift" direct box when interfacing keyboards, amps and other equipment that are powered at the stage into sound systems with balanced feedlines.

The article about shielding the pickups themselves is good, but some report that it changes the sound of the pickups in the process. Others have spray-coated the inside of the guitar and the back of the pick-guard with conductive paint, or lined them with foil, and grounded them to the star ground. Also make sure the tremolo claw is grounded to the star ground as well (or the back of the volume pot if that is what is being used as a common ground.

There are lots of good articles on the net that are helpful.

The best seem to be watching gain, using noise gate, and good grounding.

Good luck.

1.crank up the pickup volume knob.(most important of all)
2.check if there is any spark occuring in the socket.
3.check if your cable is damaged.

Use the noise gate function in FUSE to cut off the background noise. It is pretty effective. Also, many of the presets, especially the non-Fender amp models, have the input gain set WAY too high, which makes the pickup of this noise even worse. As you adjust the gain, it will improve noise pickup.

My IV is dated 12-28-10 and it arrived today and it has fizz. I have not moved it to a different location yet, and I have not tried a different guitar yet, but the problem only exists on some presets, so your solution of the gain being to high on some presets may be what my problem is. I tried all 100 and I feel that only 3 or 4 gave me the fizz sound.
I have not hooked it up to the computer yet, to try new firmware either, but Im almost to the point where I like the amp so much, that maybe I can just delete the fizz presets by manually resetting them and turning them down. I have not played with it enough to know whats going on, but Ive spent a LOT of time on here looking up FIZZ.

Your statements made me feel much better and I also read where if I hook up the IV to a computer and turn off the noise gate, it may help as well. I will keep my fingers crossed as I traded in a 900 dollar Mesa Boogie TA15 for this amp.
