So far I love the amp... I just want to take a peak inside. I'd love to see the speaker and electronics. I don't mind voiding the warrantee... it's only $100! The amp rocks... best in class!! I have a '64 Bassman50, '65 Verb tank, etc... but at lower ish volumes the new M1 really sounds great... and REALLY easy to carry!
I took the screws out of the back and CAREFULLY tried to pry/open the back and couldn't get it to budge. Is it glued to improve the amp's structure? I don't want to mar the finish. Has anyone had any luck removing the back? It should be soooo easy!??
Thanks!

No, it's not glued in...just in there really tight!! I was able to pry out the back of the first Mustang I I had, using a putty knife. But have not been able to on this second one! Like you, I don't think I'll be able to do it without marking it up somehow! It's really bothering me!! :x

I'm probably going to add a speaker jack, so I'll likely just end up drilling a hole in the back and pull it off with that.

Thanks Muleya... the putty knives worked great! I used a 4" and 2". with some patience I scooted the blades around the back seams. There is a bit of some sort of putty under the screw locations. Slowly and gently does the trick. I didn't want to mar or scratch the finish. That seems a bit delicate!. When I made it in, the build quality is quite good. The speaker did not seem cheap! It had a rather large magnet and seemed to be well damped. There is no insulation in the cab (I wouldn't have expected it either). I will probably add a 1/4" accessory speaker jack and perhaps a switch to turn on/off the internal speaker.. (but I'm a hack like that) Out of the box the amp does indeed put a smile on my face! Great job Fender...killer small amp!

Thanks again and thanks Fender!
Rock on Guys!

Muyleya, Check out the post Modding Mustang. I think this is the link. He installed a jack that cuts the speaker when used

Yeah, that's the jack I bought...just need to put it in...maybe this weekend. RockinFez, you might want to get one of them as well...that way no need for a switch!

I've got 1" and 3" putty knives which worked on my former MI...maybe I need to get 2" and 4" for my current MI!!

The main thing I was concerned about was that the back is particle board, and if you're not careful, it will start to break apart. I was thinking of using a screwdriver to pry, but it could easily start breaking up the particle board.

Another trick is to leave the screws screwed part way into the back and use them as handles to pull, but if it really sticks and you pull too hard, the particle board will give way and turn your screw hole into a gaping hole!

If I'm not too busy with yard work this weekend, I'll probably work on this again!

Is it possible to replace the stock 8" speaker/baffle for a 10"? Is there enough room?

Actually, a putty knife and a slightly larger bore wood screw to help you pull up the back panel works great. Partially screw in the bigger screw into the screw hole next to the putty knife. That way you can pull up on the screw and pry with the putty knife at the same time.

O.

It almost looks like you could get a 10" in there, but I've not measured it.

If a 10" could fit it would open up a world of opportunities.

The eminence red fang 10 might bring it to life - not that it really makes any sense to put a $250 speaker into a $100 amp. :P

Do you think opening up the back affects the tonal quality in any way? I thought I had heard about that a bit, something about more air getting pushed through. Just wondering.

Yes...open backed and closed back cabs sound different. Closed back cabs are more directional, and are generally described as having a better bass response. Open backed cabs are less directional (more sound comes out the back, obviously). I have a 2x12 cab that I've used both ways, but prefer open backed...sounds fuller to me. But it depends on the cab...if I had a 4x12 I'd definitely go closed back.

BTW, people in this thread are talking about removing the back just to see inside or to make modifications, I don't believe the intention is to leave the back off. I know for me it's not...once I've made my mods or whatever, the back goes back on.

Hi dudes, very new with wiring speakers...

I managed to open the back of my mustang 1, turns out mine was lighted glued...it took me a good while.

I'm thinking about a speaker upgrade,

but i have a question about the wires going into the stock speakers...there are three! i am assuming the red one is hot? and black is ground? but there is also a red/green one in the middle that clearly seems to be ground...

on another combo amp that i have, there is no middle wire...just red and black.

can someone explain what each of the wires are??? thanks.

PS. any links to a good read on how amp/speaker wiring works would be great.

I used a pair of pliers and grabbed hold of the the plug prongs. maybe different in USA, but over here they use same plug as is used in computers. Need to be gentle of course, but with a bit of wiggle got it open no problem.
I wonder about the ground wire too...

i just cut the back in half so i can have both half open or closed.
high tone seems better open, or else boxed in and low.

i thought about removing the back of mine to let it breathe... I'm afraid to void the warranty though.
