Hi Guys,

Okay, I've had my Mustang 3 for about two weeks. It came with firmware version 1.3 (so it must have been an old one) so I upgraded it to 1.6.4. After listening to the sample posted in the obnoxious string I noticed the "fizz" was still there. So I'll take it back and try another. To be honest, I probably wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't for this forum (didn't someone say ignorance is bliss?).

But, in spite of that, I have to say I love this amp. I'll definitely will try the suggestions you all have given me (changing strings, amp settings, pickups...) but what a difference from my Vox AD15VT! I mean, the Vox was great for its original purpose; which was to convince myself that I wanted to get back into learning and playing seriously. And after a year it did. But for me, at least at my skill level, the M3 is great.

I know this may sound silly, but I was going through the stock presets and I when I got to #50 "Hello Cello" I thought what would I ever use this for? Well, now I sit there with a glass of wine, put it on #50, turn it up (way more fun when the wife's not home) and play Sunshine of your Love buy the Cream (I used to play this when I was a kid). It's a blast.

My point is, is that I've learned there's so many possibilities...

Anyway, thanks again for convincing me to try it!

-Steve

Steve, before you bring it back, try this first (I mentioned it in the other thread, many pages ago); not sure it will help you, but worth checking:

In my case, I found the gargling decay was largely the result of the noise gate, worse on higher gain models.

So, muted strings are dead silent. Hit a note, let it fade, and the hum seems to gradually take over as the signal that's amplified.

Turn off the noise gate completely, lots of hum suddenly present (with muted strings), but no additional funny noises as sustained notes fade.

Guitar near computer doesn't help either--simply minimizing/restoring certain applications can affect the amount of noise when I'm sitting in front of the computer.

Check it out (and let us know if it made a difference for you or not).

Hi PITA,

I tried what you suggested, turning off the noise gate and even moving the M3 to another room with no electronics running; the "fizz" was still there. So I exchanged the amp for another, updated the firmware and still have the same problem.

For me, I like the amp enough to live with it, it's not that bad; just annoying every once and a while. Maybe Fender will come out with another fix. Anyway, thanks for your help!

Hi
I had a similar situation using a Mustang iii and a Peavey JF-1, which is also a 335 copy. I tried all of the Fender models and just couldn’t quite get the sound that I was looking for. The stock Peavey pickups seem a bit heavy on the treble side when using the Fender models and the 1st – 3rd strings were almost an Albert Collins 'sharp as an ice pick' sound.

So, since Alvin Lee is one of my favorite players and has used a 335 since the mid 60s, I went back to the model of amp that he began with which was the Vox AC 30, on the Mustang it’s the British 60’s model. After reading on the Vox website, I began using the Cut control along with tone controls, I was able to be a very nice clean tone and then adjust the Gain control when I needed overdrive. I'm also using compression to balance out the string volume on the Peavey.

I wonder if Fender might be able improve situations like this on the Fender models by allowing the choice of hi and lo inputs (thru the software/firmware) like many of their tube amps.

I’m also using a Gibson Blueshawk, which has Gibson’s ‘enhanced’ P90s that they called Blues 90s. The Fender amp models sound really good with those pickups, but I’m a P90 fanatic so…. And then for the Strat sound, I have a Dean Avalanche MQ that has some very hot single coils that were the stock pickups. The Dean and the Gibson both sound good with the same presets.

Needless to say, I’m sold on the Mustang iii. I once owned a Hot Rod Deluxe for several years and it is a great amp, its easy to understand why it’s Fender’s best selling amp ever. But with the Mustang, I don’t have to crank it to get a really good tone and that’ a huge plus to me. I love the tone of a HRD but the Mustang suits my needs much better.
