I was interested in buying the Mustang V head and eventually getting a cab for it, but for a while I would be using it with headphones and connecting to a computer. I was wondering if this is a good idea and if the Mustang V head would need to be connected to a load (cab) to function properly? I'd like to put the hd on my desk next to the computer.

Thank you,
dave

It is Solid State - no tubes - it is fine to run this without a "load". I've used my V head this way for several hours at a time.

Please note that if you buy a cabinet other than the Mustang cabinet that you MAY neet to eliminate any "common" ground between the two speakers. This means that the speaker wires from each speaker must ONLY go to the femal plug for that speaker. Many cabinets run the ground wire ( the one that has a [ - ] on the tab ) to BOTH speakers.

You will know soon enough as you will hear a "helicopter" sound comming from your amp. HINT: before plugging into ANY speaker turn your Master Volume WAY down.

Good Tone! Get it . . . you won't regret it!

Blessings, Bo Baker

Thanks for the replies. I was also wondering how the Mustang V head and cab would be for a bedroom amp only, I'm wanting a great sounding bedroom amp that I can use at low volumes and for recording. I like the type of various amp emulations and effects that the Mustangs and Spider amps have?

I'm running Fuse and the V head through a laptop that has a TASCAM USB interface, Alesis M1 Active USB speakers (I'm using the speakers in standalone mode, not USB mode...just plug into the inputs), and Sony wireless headphones. Perfect volume and tone for a bedroom, but with 150 watts o' pure power!

I've been using a Mustang III connected via USB to my computer and headphones. I am not at all happy with the way it sounds.

What's worse is that the sound when connected direct to the computer and when playing live are completely different. So any presets setup for direct connections are bogus for live playing.

Not to mention that there doesn't seem to be workable ASIO driver buffer settings: it's either unacceptable latency or all kinds of nasty noises.

I suppose that you can't expect miracles. Nobody seems to be able to be able to produce a good virtual direct box.

Fortunately, I bought this amp for live playing - and it sounds incredible live. I love it!

I am not having those problems with this setup.

What kind of speakers and headphones are you using?

I'm using audio-technica headphones, which sound O.K. for everything else.

I also use the cabinet voiced output from my Carvin TN100 with ASIO drivers for my Emu & cubase system. That system doesn't sound great - it's a bit dull, but I was was able to find buffer settings that worked. Presets setup for this system don't sound exactly the same direct as they do live, but there's some similarity.

The fender Mustang/ASIO sounds brittle - like it needs a direct box. Amplitube helps a little. But when I play my presets live, they sound nothing like they did direct. I have to completely redo all the settings.
