Hi depepat,

Sorry for rakin' up the coals again but it's called -
" Ought o' sight, ought o' mind."
And no reduction in price because of no 5 Year "Transferable" Warranty
anywhere else but the " good old USA " . (Means you can sell it and the next
user gets the remaining part of the Warranty period !.)
We " out there " (as they say in US parlance), are subsidizing the cost of that
USA warranty - and sales outside the USA have to be higher in total than the
home market.

What's new , Pussycat ?

Jim ( "out here" )

On the warranty point, Ryan at Fender UK wrote to me saying:

Quote:
The warranty over here in the UK is 2 years and not 5 like in the USA however UK consumer laws are much tighter here, so protect you better in the case of problems. This is not the same in the USA so they have a longer warranty.

I replied:

Quote:
Ryan - re the warranty thing - with respect mate that's utter nonsense. UK consumer legislation under the sale & supply of goods act only gives rights if goods are not of merchantable quality/fit for purpose - you're most unlikely to have any rights after 12 months let alone after 2 yrs unless the product was proven to have a design defect. In the US, you're actually better protected because of their product liability legislation.

So c'mon - You give 2 yrs in UK, 3 yrs in Ireland, 1 year in Australia and 5 yrs in US. If Laney can give a 5-year warranty (extending their standard 12 mths by registering on-line) why can't Fender? Fender needs to treat its global customers fairly & more equally. I think your customer practice on this issue is outrageous.

Reinforces my decision to go with the Laney Cub

Best

Rich

Nuff said I think!

depepat, you're not alone. Same 1 year warranty here in Israel (dealer warranty, not Fender), and +10% beyond your price at current exchange rates. But could be somewhat less with proper haggling. :)

Australia is a bigger market so the price and warranty terms are a little surprising. I'm guessing shipping could be more expensive so may be part of the reason.

Wow, that's not right. The warranty was one of the main reasons I looked into the Mustang. It was either gonna be a Mustang or a Vypyr because both have a 5 year warranty, at least in the US.

Hi Rockcat,

That 3 Year Warranty to us in Ireland is a deal from Thomann - Germany,
but the Irish Fender Dealer warranty is usually just 1 Year.
Just a small detail in the plot.
Maybe punters in the UK should be buying the Mustang III from Thomann,
Germany - no delivery charge over £195 - 3 Year Warranty -30 day
money-back guarantee. Not bad, Huh.?
Maybe the UK dealers have copped on and are making lower offers now.
The Irish Fender boys sure have'nt.

Jim

It all just seems so inconsistent on the same product - the irony is that the Mustangs are probably cheaper in the US than anywhere else. :?

After a few years of shopping for musical gear in the so-called 'global economy', I have come to realise that, behind the veneer of an apparently open and free global market, most of the exact same cosy little nationalistic and protectionist policies and practices still wheel away completely unchanged, and mostly unchallenged.

In this regard Fender is probably no worse, but sadly for us also no better, than any of the other major companies who deal in this kind of gear.

Hi,
Our complaining may be having some effect !

I see today that my nearest Fender dealer is selling the M III
@ €289 with Free Shipping - warranty not stated - email coming soon.
Down from €320 - last time I checked.

I paid Thomann, Germany - €266 -Free Shipping- on Feb1 last.
Today it's €259 !

Maybe the they're are reading our Forum posts ? -
and orders were going elsewhere.

Not sure the Australian dealers are listening in just yet - saw a Mustang III in one of Perth's biggest music stores today on the floor for $519A; same amp in the US would be about $300US I think ? That's a lot of transport costs - maybe it flew here from China First Class !

Hi depepat,

Yeh ! - and picked up a few Exchange Rates and Surcharges on it's way,
even though it probably got to you direct, via Fender's shipping instructions.
By the way, the back page of your Mustang Advanced Owners Manual says
that it's "Hecho en China" in Spanish ! - so anyone in the US not fluent
in the lingo won't notice. Also says - Imported by Fender Mexico in Ensenada -
in Spanish. There's also a Hazardous Substance' Name notice - in Chinese !

Gulp ! - WTF is that ? !

Adios,
Jim

OK guys, I've had a very nice E-mail from Matt Davey, Service Manager of Fender GBI explaining why the warranties are different in each country, and it seems a reasonable approach. I must admit that I forgot about the 6 years allowed under the UK legislation:

Quote:
Hi Rich,

Ryan has passed you email onto me to address the issues of the differing warranties in various territories.

The main reasons for the difference are down to local consumer laws. In the UK and Ireland all Fender guitars and Amps have a 2 year warranty from Fender GBI. We feel this offers a good level of protection against any manufacturing faults as most will show themselves in the first 6 months after production. This can often mean that a fault becomes apparent before the product reaches the market place. However, should a fault arise within 2 years of the purchase date we will repair or replace the product as necessary.

Under the Sale of Goods and Services Act, a product must be of satisfactory quality and be fit for purpose and the seller has a responsibility for up to 6 years. That means that should a fault arise after the 2 year warranty, you still have options.

For example, I had an iPhone for 2 years and it stopped working. Apple offer only a one year warranty on iPhones so at first O2 didn’t offer me a replacement or repair. I argued that the iPhone wasn’t fit for purpose or of satisfactory quality and O2 supplied me with a replacement phone. A mention of the Sale of Goods Act certainly helped.

Although the Fender warranty is 2 years, we will always endeavour to help customers should products become faulty after this period if wear and tear isn’t an issue.

Kind regards,

Matt Davey | Service Manager
Fender Musical Instruments GBI

Hi,
Good. But only under UK legislation ! - which maybe does not apply in
other countries.
So, Fender, let all your dealers, everywhere, know what they have to
live up to, locally, and to let their customers know - or else.

Jim

I'm not familiar with the Sale of Goods and Services Act or under what terms there's liability for 6 years, but wow, if it is comprehensive enough and people know about it, it would drastically increase the burden of sellers. Of course it's nice from the customers' perspective, but not if it forced a price increase consequently.

Rockcat, Fender seem to be awfully nice to you. How come? :)

Not sure that the UK legal situation is much comfort here in Australia where one year warranties are the standard for pretty much all consumer goods, musical or otherwise.

The latest retailers trick here seems to be to offer to extend your one year warranty on payment of an additional and sometimes quite substantial fee - in effect you're being asked to take out an insurance policy on your gear not dying after 12 months.

As some of my UK friends would probably say, a 'nice little earner' for the retailer !
