I was wondering if anyone performs love with the mustang one and if so, do you mic the amp, or go direct into the PA via USB or line out?

And... if you go out the USB or line out, is the speaker in the Mustang I cancelled out or do you still hear via the speaker? If so, one could mice it and get a line out signal and mix the 2 together (in theory that is) :)

Thanks!

Hi, sea.

The USB port won't cut off the speaker but the headphone out will.
I'm about to gig with mine tomorrow night with a nine piece R&B horn band. Needless to say, I'll be micing my MI for the concert but so far I haven't had the need to during rehearsals. The little guy keeps up... but just barely. In retrospect, the MII probably would have been a more practical choice for my needs. So as long as it's going through the main board and my monitor, it should be just fine. I was planning on posting the results of its performance afterwards so stay tuned.

Sounds Cool O! I'm looking at ordering the M1 today. The only thing that I don't like is that the 4 switch foot controller for the III, IV, & V won't work with it. Are there any cool ways to get around switching presets with it live?

Of course I'll be using mine for home studio and practice use (not playing live yet).

AS far as playing Live with the M1... I think micing and going thru the monitors is a good way to go. Using the M1 like that should be sufficient for any gig. It's only when you get into a "non micing" situation that a bigger amp may be needed. (IMHO) :D

I was also wondering about the stock speaker in the M1. I hear that some are thinking about swopping it out with a Jensen or something.

Here's a thread I found on it.

What's your take on that?

I'm not sure about swapping out the speaker. Typically in these types of guitar amps, the power amp section and stock speaker are designed to work as efficiently as possible. That's why these little buggers are so loud. As I said in my reply, the MII is probably a more practical choice. It has a bigger speaker that can move more air and it's only a few pounds heavier. It will work better for those occasions when micing is not possible. I think micing is the best option for keeping the sound under control no matter what amp you use but it does require a good monitor system. Without that, forget it. I don't believe in relying on the amp to cut through the mix because you can't "mix" the band from on stage. It just becomes a volume competition. You don't have to be painfully loud to sound great. IMHO.

Both the MI & II are limited in their preset access and the only practical way to get around that is to use pedals - that's what I've done. You can with some practice, use the foot switch and the Save button to reassign which presets the foot switch can access. Read up on that in the manual. I know that it's doable but I'd rather not chance it during a concert where a misstep would be highly embarrassing.

I would opt for the MII if I could to do it again.

In regards to the speaker swap, it's my guess that the MI would benefit from a speaker swap! However, I found out it voids the warranty. And so far I've not been overly impressed with the build quality of certain aspects of these amps...certainly not in how well the headphone and USB ports are mounted! So at this point I've opted NOT to do a speaker swap, feeling the warranty is more valuable!

However, if I decide to void the warranty, Warehouse Guitar Speakers sells an 8" for $40 that I think I'd try...these guys make some great speakers for very reasonable prices! Weber also has a number of 8" speakers that would likely be good options as well.

What speaker would you guy at the Warehouse?

Also... can't you just upgrade the speaker and then save the old speaker? That way, you could always put the old one back in if you needed to send the amp in for repairs.

Of course it's just a $99 amp so if it breaks you can always buy a new one. Cheaper than a night out on the town!

I just ordered the Mustang I today at Sam Ash (SMASH, as I call them) here in Clearwater FL. Sweetwater was out of the M1 till JULY (DOH) so... I went local

For me... I just need something to play in the studio and at home. Currently I have a Roland VG-99 in my humble 10'X10' home studio. So if I want to jam in any other room I'd have to break it down and use headphones. :?

At least with the Mustang I can can jam in any room and record with it if desired. For live? Hmmm... well... when I get there with my songs, I'd probably get a good PA like the QSC's K12 powered PA speakers and then go direct into a PA with either the POD HD500, or the Tech 21 PSA 1.1, or the AXE FX Ultra.

Gigged with the MI Saturday night - WOW! The amp kicked $@! but the only thing I have to remember for the next time is that I should have the amp closer to me for feedback - the good kind - and so that the sound guy has enough head room to boost me for solos. The master volume was set to 4 and it was perfect. I heard enough of the amp directly and was augmented by my monitor.

One thing I found was that I really do not like SM57s for amps. They're too scooped EQ wise and all the midrange warmth was gone and I had to go to the board and cut the oppressively boomy low end and boost the mids. Even then it was still a little shrill and piercing. Honestly, I've never understood what it is that people like about those mics. They're good for toms and some snares but I think way too harsh for anything else.

Warehouse only makes one 8" speaker, so that makes that an easy decision!

The problem with keeping the old speaker to put back in if warranty work is needed is that they put this transparent red glue stuff on the screws that goes down to the baffle. Once you turn those screws, there's no hiding what you've done!

But then you are also right, it's only $99, so not the end of the world if something does go wrong!

I don't mind the SM57 for micing guitar cabs, but I've not tried it on the MI. However, the SM57s are known for having a mid-hump, not being scooped! :?

I have heard a number of folks like the Sennheiser 609 (I think that's the right number). It sells for just a tad more than the Shure, but doesn't have the mid-hump and they feel it provides for a nicer mic'd amp tone...you might want to check into one.

That mid hump starts at about 3k and peaks at 6k - right where the harshness lives. It dips a bit at 400hz (right where the "fatness" is for guitars) and is relatively flat between 700hz and 2k. That response curve is why it sounds so stellar on tom-toms where 400hz sounds kinda boxy. The SM57 might be fine for larger 12" speakers but I don't think it's a good match for smaller ones. In hindsight I should have tried my trusty old EV N/D857b because I've found that if I like the mic for my vocals, it typically works well for my guitar sound... usually - there will likely be exceptions.

I'm tempted by the e609 as it is much flatter in the areas where the 57 has the peaks. It's got a kooky pickup pattern at around 16k but that won't matter much for a guitar cab. Thanks for reminding me of that mic, Muleya.

Hey have you played anymore with the Advanced amp settings and driving the "power tubes" harder?

Wow, you've done your research! That's way more than I knew!

I have played around with the bias settings a bit. To be honest, I have found the effect very subtle...to the point I've kind of written it off. On at least one or two models, if anything, it seemed to introduce more fizz, and not in a good way! If I get really bored sometime, I may spend more time with it.

Yeah, the bias setting is a bit weird really. What do you make of the blend knob on the Bassman model?

I was assuming that blends the Bright and Normal channels, just like on the plexi...similar to using a jumper, only here you can dial in how much of each channel you want in the mix. The bassman isn't one of the models I use much, so I haven't played around with it a lot.
