New here to forum, thanks for all of the great information and posts.

Before I purchased my Mustang III I read a lot of posts and had some concern about live band use with the Mustang amps. I have gigged my Mustang III a few times now and it has been fantastic.

I play rhythm guitar in a five piece band, with a lead player playing a tube amp. 60's through 80's 90's pop / rock style (cover) music. We always mic all amps and drums and I've never placed the volume over 3. The cleans cut through very well and I've been happy with the more distorted, dirtier tones I've used. So far I've used just unedited presets. I play a Carvin electric, with pickups set in a telecaster fashion.

Just wanted to post if anyone is thinking of gigging the Mustang series, I would recommend them.

Thanks for that. A criticism of modeling amps is that at volume punching through the mix can be a problem, so I'm reassured to hear from you how well the Mustang III performed.

Unfortunately I think the Mustang III has one big omission - and that's it lacks the option of connecting to an extension cab. 1x12" amps are more portable (which is why I chose the III rather than the IV) but they can sound 'boxy' - and this is nothing to do with 'volume' per-se, more the 'fullness' of tone. How did your M3 sound on stage and cope against 2/4 speaker rigs? Was it 'full' enough?

I started using my Mustang III by itself on gigs 2 weeks ago. I've used 4 time and I hear no "boxyness" at all. I never got the volume over 4 so I don't know how it sounds with higher volume. I've never been this happy with my live sound.

I feel I cut through well and was represented well within the mix. What I would like to try at a gig is adjusting the height of the amp. I've just been setting it on the floor and setting the mic in front, a bit off center. I believe it is a Peavey small mic, nothing fancy.

Another surprising factor is this amp is LOUD. 100 watts is a lot of volume, I am surprised at how loud this amp is. Similar to your extension cab idea, I feel the amp really missed out on a line out. If I had the ability to line signal to a board channel and have my stage volume, it would be perfect.

If you're miked up through the PA, the amp position is less important. But if you are using the amp un-miked (which I previously thought you were, and why I asked how it cut through the mix) then its vital to get it off the ground by at least 18" and angled slightly if possible. This is so that the full sound gets to the audience at ear-level, and you don't lose a chunk of your tone through the floor.

Miked-up properly, even small amps can sound huge (e.g. Jimmy Page was a master at miking-up his little Supro). However, I was trying to get a feel for how the Mustang III cut through on its own, and hence where my 'boxy' comment was coming from re a 1x12".

Hi, Live guys,

I've been using my Mustang III live for some months now.
I'm "up-against" a 500w per ch. Synth keyboard and surround P/A setup,
- no drummer - in a 2-piece !
The M III stands up to the volume demands with ! no miking-up !.
I just set it up on my empty little accessories metal carrying case about
8" off the floor, no tilt. The Gains not above 4 and Volumes at 8.5 ,
( reverse for Dst. sounds ) and of course the Master up around 8 .
I use a volume Pedal in the FX loop to take advantage of the full guitar
( Epiphone Sheraton II with Hummers ) volume input, for dirty sounds.
To cope with not being able to twiddle with the Bass and Mid and Treble
controls, as with a standard analogue amp, to tune it to the room acoustics,
I use a small 7-Band Graphics pedal also in the FX loop in line with the
Volume Pedal, to make these essential gig to gig small changes.
You can also get a bit more drive to the Power Amp, which it can take,
by - slightly ! -boosting the Graphic o/p slider just above mid level.
This also will allow you to back off some of the Gain/Volume levels for even
cleaner sounds. Be careful though - not to push the Power Amp too far.
And guess what ? - The M III does'nt even feel warm after a 3 or 4 hour gig,
- only me - worrying about it !.
Before the M III, I used a Fender Stage 112SE, a great, clean workhorse,
but a lot heavier, with a Zoom GFX5 FX Pedal. The M III has to live up to that
proved, reliable, combination. I have programmed my Presets to match the Zoom
pedals' fx patches/setup order, using the M III's selection of great amp sounds,
for better familiarity using the 2 and 4 Button F/Switches when playing live.

It's getting there. Phew !

Rock on,
Jim

P.S. Thinking of using my Behringer Hell Babe Wah Pedal in the front end
to top it all.

P.S. + P.S. - Hey ! Did'nt this start out to be a more compact setup ? !

Hi 2526b,
You can use the FX Loop's Send as a Line Out ! (You may have to lift the ground at the other end to prevent any possible hum,
due to the different equipments' signal ground , but it works !). The Send Output connection does not silence the M III Speaker output !
So it can be "perfect" for you.

Jim

That's strange! I thought all efx sends had to send the entire preamp out through the efx send--thus breaking the signal path if it doesn't came back via the efx return. How else could you have an effective efx treatment if only HALF of the signal was going through the efx send/out?

Hi,
It sends the entire signal out and does'nt break any connection as the Master is
independent of the FX loop operation. Only if you input into the Return do you break
the connection from the preamp. Try it, won't do any harm.

Ah, the return input activates the loop! Brilliant, thanks.
