I bought a Mustang I in early January and have kept great care of it. It's my first amp I actually bought rather than the 4 I've stumbled upon or have been given, so I proudly take care of it. About 2 weeks ago the silver bracket that you plug the USB into the amp vanished, leaving just a hole that I can see directly into. I've since convered up the hole with electric tape to keep anything from getting in so the amp is in great shape warranty-wise. The local Fender dealership is on the other side of town and close at 5pm so with work it's hard to find the time to take it in. The one time I did, I spoke with a new guy who didn't know what tell me other than to take my number and call me (that was about 10 days ago).
Assuming this requires them to send it off to Fender, does anyone know how long I will be without my amp? Other than the ability to record using USB and change presets, the amp works fine, so if they are going to take 3 weeks to fix it I'd like to have a little heads up before I turn it in. So if anyone has had a problem requiring sending it off for repairs how long did it take?

That happened to my first MI, but I'd only had it a week, so Musician's Friend exchanged it for me. I've heard they do not actually repair these, my guess is your warranty claim will result in a new amp. Of course, that's just hearsay at the moment. And if that's the case, the warranty lasts 5 years, so if you don't need to use the USB port, there's no hurry!

If they do replace it, I'm not sure how it works...if it gets sent back to Fender and Fender sends you a new one, or if the dealer gives you a new one right away?

Where's the dude who posted in every thread about Fender's great warranty there for a while?? He might know.

I'm sorry that you're experiencing this issue with your amp. The amp should be sent to a service center for repair. In some cases, the amps are replaced. You're usually looking at at a few weeks for turnaround.

Having to return the amp and/or be without it for weeks over such a small issue would be pretty annoying.

The vanishing USB input seems to happen often enough for Fender to need to consider a design modification on future production runs of the Mustangs that actually fixes the input to the amp top panel. so it can't just disappear inside when pushed.

I've 'permanently' added a USB extension connector to my amp so that I plug into that connector rather than the one on the amp itself, to avoid the vanishing problem.

yeah I've tried going through my store I bought it from but they are only an "authorized dealer" opposed to "authorized service", and the nearest service center reccomended by fender is a few towns over. And like someone had said given it's a small problem, losing it for a month is a pretty high price so I'm not rushing out to send it off. I called Fender and it seems like an easy enough fix, and the regarding the warranty they said it's covered so it's really just a time issue now. The permanent usb connection is brilliant idea, there are benefits to the "top facing" inputs, but I've got about 3 cables that have a now permanent bend in them from being plugged in and dangling over. I've used electrical tape to reinforce them around that spot so if any has that problem thats one solution i've found. But as far as the warranty issue with my original post, I've gotten verification from Fender and my store that I'm covered.

To avoid having to 'kink' a normal USB extension cable I managed to find one on e-bay - from a supplier in Hong Kong ! - that is a 'factory made' right angled mini USB connection lead, only about 20cm long. I have fixed this to the side of the amp with black electrical tape. Almost invisible and puts no pressure on the potentially fragile USB socket.

In my experience, this type of USB connector is very delicate and it is actually quite common to see them broken off in a lot of devices - cell phones and USB hubs in particular. The problem is that this connector is typically held in place by four extremely flimsy solder points and it relies on the hole in the case to keep it in place. Even then it's quite easy to dislodge the connector from the solder points, especially if the connector is slightly inset. Re-soldering those points is no picnic either - I've tried and nearly went cross eyed using magnifying glasses. I do wish Fender had chosen the more robust USB "B" type connector (like the ones on the back of your printer). It probably would have only added only a few cents to the cost of the amp and be well worth it.

I hope Fender makes good on your waranty.

O.

My usb jack has also broken. I am capable of repairing it myself. Anyone know how I can get the part number so I can order the part?

Hi mike1000,

We recommend that you do not open the amp up yourself for both safety and warranty reasons. You may want to contact one of our authorized service centers nearest to you to discuss the repair and parts availability. Please see the link below to locate a service center. And please let us know if we can assist further from our end.

Best Regards,

Fender has the best warranty in the business. The turnaround time is a minor inconvenience.

My amp is nearly 2 years old and probably out of warranty. I used to do repair professionally and completely capable of safely opening up the amp and soldering in a new usb board. If I can get the part It will save me from paying shipping plus labor plus the down time. I bought the amp new for 199.99, so shipping and a repair would nearly put me at 1/2 the amp cost!

mike1000, I replaced a headphone jack and I have very minimal electronic repair skills. That being said, I wouldn't attempt it unless I was willing void the warranty and accept the risk of possible further damage.

I posted some pics of my repair,
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=86283&hilit=broken+headphone+jack
towards the end of there is some discussion about the usb jack. Note that the usb is connected to a flimsy little vertical standing board. If that board is broken, I doubt you can get a replacement from anywhere other than an authorized Fender service shop, and I doubt they will sell you parts, but hey, you could always ask.

But if its just a matter of re-soldering the jack, here is a link to a some replacements, (they have the headphone jacks here too.)

I'm not 100% sure if one of these will work in the mustang, you will probably have to open your mustang up and look at the jack that's in there and compare to the PDF's on the website.

Good luck.

If you live in the United States, you've got another 3 years to go on that warranty.

Hi mike1000,

Just chiming back in here to clarify that you may want to contact a service center for parts availability and cost if having them do the work is not an option. Are you not the original owner and in the US? I see you refer to a 2 year period regarding warranty in your post. Please let us know if we can assist further.

Best Regards,

Well, its been a whole year later and still no luck getting a part number or a Fender service center willing to sell me the part..I really like this little amp. I am
completely capable of replacing the usb jack safely with out injuring myself or further damaging the amp, and seeings I am unable to find my original receipt of sale, the warranty does me no good.. Please, please, Fender, this part only cost less than a buck! Can you just send it to me? Please!!
