Just ordered a new "used" Epi G-400 Vintage.... was wondering if anyone was playing this (or a very similar) guitar through the Mustang III... I've really enjoyed playing my strats through the amp and my Gibson L6-S to some degree but not so much my ES-335 copy.

All the tweaks to the presets have been to get the best possible sounds out of my favorite strat... I'm guessing I'll have to set aside some of the other presets to tweak for my humbucker'd guitars to get the best out of them and the amp. Any thoughts?

try the Marshall models for dirty, and the older tweeds for a bluesier tone. The newer amps (including the supersonic) need tweaking to accomodate the output from the SG pu's unless you are after metal distortion. And I'm not convinced that the reverb models suit the SG.

Thanks Colos... yeah, I'm digging the Supersonic but have tamed it substantially even with my single coils. I haven't explored the Marshall models much so this might be a good opportunity to do so. I've been finding that the room and plate reverbs are more distortion/effect friendly that the 63/65 Fender reverb setting so may start there...suppose it all has a lot to do with the style of music you like too.

You can use the Master Volume control in the advanced section to also "tame" some of the amps. Remember, the British 80 is a High gain Marshall type, the American 90s is like a Mesa Triple Rectifier - again a rather "rude" amplifier.
The Epi SG also has "hotter" pickups than the original PAF's which means they have less high end and you will most likely have to cut back on the output of the guitar. If you start loosing you high's, I'd install some bypass caps on the volume control of the guitar to keep them closer to the sound of original humbuckers. The standard "overwound" humbucker found in many guitars today has less high end than the classic pickups found as original equipment.

I'd start with the British 70 if your looking for that AC/DC tone, it's more authentic in its modeling. Also, the 59' Bassman is very close to the circuit used in the JCM45's so there's a place to start from.

The 65 Twin will also is very authentic in its sound from humbuckers.

Well, the SG arrived yesterday and sounds great through the Mustang III. I'll post some updates as I get a chance to tweak some settings for it.

So far I've been noodling with the Marshal settings, the American 90's and even the Metal 2000. Strange because I'm not really a metal guy but with some tweaks to the amp settings I'm getting some great tones! This amp continues to amaze me... kudos Fender!

The hardest thing so far is just getting used to the SG's flat radius and the fact it's kinda neck heavy...sounds great though and I'm really surprised that such an inexpensive guitar is put together so well. Budget guitars seem to have come a long way in the last 10-15 years... or maybe I've just been lucky with the last few I've picked up.
