The first thing I did was update the firmware.... so...

So using the 4 switch pedal that comes with the mustang 4... go to patch 39... Strum a chord fairly hard to let it sustain.... then use the pedal and switch to patch 40... a lot of weird noise happens in between like it's trying to catch up... then within the same instance switch back to patch 39 and it makes some weird noise before sounding like it's supposed to...

Defective unit.. or is Fender failing in this regard?

I noticed the same thing between 9 & 10 (or even 8 & 9). I speculated that whatever signal processing is going on for certain (stereo [?]) effects may require a bit of a buffer to process (or IOW a few tens of a second worth of audio), and until it's fully acquired/elapsed it sounds a little strange. No idea if that really holds water or not though--and for my use so far it has not been a big problem or annoyance, more of a curiosity.

PITA

I just got my mustang 4 today and I don't seem to have that problem.
I think since these amps are so new though, maybe there is a problem with them since someone else said they had this problem.
Also I love your user name! I am a devoted gibson player as well! I love me some Les Pauls!
:D

Hey! I just tried that out on my amp and it turns out I have the same problem.
The thing is, I don't think it's a problem. I think switching from that sound and holding the note just alters the sound a little. It isn't worrying me at all. So I wouldn't worry about it!
If you are worried though, you could contact Fender or just go to your local guitar shop.
I hope I have helped you out!

If your just at home playing then no big deal... but... if your playing in a live situation.. which I do quite often... then yes this it is a bigger deal..So if Fender is saying don't use it for a live gig.. they probably should have mentioned that?? Stay on one channel like some of the demo's and jam to a tune and it's great......but channel switching is not so great... :(

I love everything else about it... :)

I did the same thing using fuse to change the presets 39-40 with headphones on. Whats going on is in the effects both have modulation and delay but at different setting so it's like twisting the speed knob on your phase shifter. I'm still learning the amp and footswitch but a workaround may be to shutoff the effects when switching. I plan on redoing the order of my presets to put block together like I will actually use. So far I'm only saving my newly created presets in fuse. When I'm happy with them I'll write/send them to the amp.
