my speakers are 5" diameter and I doubt if 6" diameter would fit remembering that the 5 " can utilize all the "ventilation holes" fender drilled in the front panel, the 6" may end up being "loaded" (but that may not be a bad thing!).Wattage rating is important-higher the better otherwise don't exagerate with the volume, best of luck Josh!

You think with a custom baffle board a 6" would fit?

By George ,he did it again! The new Mustang V - b)!
With summer coming up it's impossible to practise with cans on your head so.....plan "b"....put a couple of 5" speakers in the box!!!and man do they cook!!!

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

hook 'em up to your output jacks and "Bob's your uncle"(Australian vernacular).Truly works.
No "sweat on me" this summer!Move it and groove it boys n' girls ,mums and dads.
Next mod?...thinking thinking.......

Dude, that's way cool! What does the front look like? You know, I wonder if it would be possible to hack a soundbar and put its speakers in there. Hmmm... most may be too long but if you could find a short one...

I just ordered a couple of these from Amazon:

http://jensentone.com/mod5-30.php

$26/each and read a lot of good reviews for these in guitar amps (pignose for example). Depending on how much I like them and how the baffle board seems to take being rattled by speakers, I may add some 6-15s in 4ohm in series to each side or another pair of these to get louder.

For those of you who know the amp/load issues better than I, I *think* going to 16ohms/side would drop the output to 75*.5=37.5W and going to 12ohm would be 75*.75=56.25W? If so, the 2x5-30s would be overcompensating for the output (37.5 into 60W of speakers) and the 5-30/6-15 would be a little overamped (56.26 into 45W of speaker). Is this correct? If so, would putting the 5-30 ahead of the 6-15 in series cause it to take more of the load?

Thanks,
Josh

Hi Josh ,from my extremely limited knowledge of electronics if you have 2 spkrs, one an 8ohm the other 4ohm in series, the 4ohm will sound louder but if some expert can verify or correct my assumption I'd be most grateful. If you look closely at the photo you'll notice the rightside spkr(left when looking from front of amp) isn't at the extreme end of the baffle board 'cause there were no holes drilled where the Fender logo sits, and I doubt if you could really fit 4 spkrs in there, unless you rebuilt a whole new board!
Cheers and I think those spkrs will do fine(at least they are a brand name!)

I do plan to build a custom board - likely birch plywood instead of MDF so it will react better to speaker vibration. If I like how it sounds, I'll transfer the fabric and logo to cover it.

Actually, most speaker manufacturers would disagree with you on that. MDF is "deader" - that is, its resonant frequency is much lower than that of other wood materials and won't impart its sound and color the output of the speakers. In fact, speaker manufacturers are always trying to create a speaker cabinet that has no sound of its own - very difficult.
I know guitar amps often contradict traditional Hi-Fi concepts but even in this case, I wouldn't use a more resonant speaker baffle material because it might sound really boxy. Especially since you're going to be using very small speakers that can have a pronounced tendency to sound boxy. The stiffer and less resonant the baffle, the better.

Learn something new every day! Thanks much for the info and I'll take your advice. Since you seem to know the subject better than I, would it help reduce boxiness to open the back?

One other idea I had was to mount two larger (8" or 6x9" Webers) pointing down since this amp will likely sit on a chair when I play it out. That way I could get a little more diameter and the combo of the 5-30 and a Weber 6x9 20 would be 50W/side. It *may* be possible to fit a 10" that way too...

That you would have to experiment on to see which works better. But if most bookshelf speakers are any indication, a closed back might be better and you might want to consider putting in a port to enhance the bass response.

Ooooh, that's a crazy idea... and I like it! Just make sure that you disconnect the tweeters on the 6X9s (if they're car speakers) - unless you like a lot of fizz.

Hey guys, I got to thinking that you modders may be creating a newer cooler version of roland's old JC-60! I like this. Kudos and do keep it up! :D :D

Ah - makes sense. The 5" Jensens are supposed to get here next week so I'll report back in then. Maybe have some sound samples A/Bing with a 4x12.

The Webers are replacement guitar speakers for Hammond and Gibson cabs. They are guitar specific and alnico/vintage voiced. I measured the inside of the cabinet last night, and they'd fit... It's *really* tempting to try it!

Don't expect too much from those little Jensens now...

Guess I didn't see the "Webers" part.

I built it up with them, and they work pretty darn well. Particularly for cleaner amp models, they sound plenty good for open jams. The Champ, Princeton and Deluxe models in particular are the best souding to my ears. Crank up the gain, and it gets pretty hissy. I'm going to give it a few weeks and decide whether or not to put in the Webers too. It is getting fairly heavy now as the Jensens have big magnets on them, so I may leave well enough alone.

I've been watching this thread with interest; adding speakers to the V is a really cool idea, and I wish I'd thought of it--I might have gone with the V instead of the III!

Hey, GT George what's the trick to take the back board out? I removed all five screws but it still wont move. Is there something else holding it in. Thanks.
