I am thinking of doing the four cable method with my pod hd500 and mustang III. I had some questions and wondered if others had tried this and could share tips.

First is the effects loop in the III serial?

What patch should the III be set to or does this matter?

How about using planet waves classic cables for the connections? Here is the info on them from amazon.

If you have experiences or suggestions to share please do!

Yes. (You should be able to run your HD500 directly into the effects return and bypass the Mustang amp modeling completely.)

It depends on what you're trying to do I suppose. I think if you're hoping to use the amp models on the HD500, bypassing as above will give the most fidelity; if you're hoping to include some of the Mustang's effects then the cleanest Twin model on the Mustang might be best (e.g., starting from stock preset #93; sadly but perhaps not surprisingly there's no way to bypass the amp models on the Mustang)--minimal gain, flat EQ, cab off. Of course, you might stumble across some other configuration that still sounds good even when the Mustang is adding its own color, it always pays to experiment.

Sorry, no opinions on the cables.

I have a Mustang III and a Vox Tonelab LE multi-effects pedal. I tried connecting the Tonelab through the effects send & return on the Mustang, but I didn't like the way that sounded. (I disabled the effects and cabinet simulation, set everything flat, tried a couple of different amp models, but it sounded really harsh and brittle.)

So just the other day, I came up with another idea: I plugged my guitar directly into the Tonelab and ran the stereo outputs into the Aux input on the Mustang. It sounded MUCH better. The Aux input bypasses all the processing for a totally clean sound. Now I'm planning to get an A/B/Y switch so I can select between the Tonelab, the Mustang, or split the signal and play through both simultaneously. Should be cool!
