The only other addition may be a compressor (I've got a MXR Supercomp I really like) - the onboard comps just aren't *squishy* enough for me - they're more on the subtle side.

What does the compressor do for you? Over the years I've tried them with guitars, vocals, recording - I never really hear a difference. I'm interested to know what one would do if added to the guitar/amp...

I never used one until I got my Barber Tone Press on my pedal board into my BDRI. Wouldn't be without it now. It just fills in the note and the harmonics tend to come to the front. It uses a wet and dry signal with a blend knob which makes it so good. Adds a little sustain. The Tone Press is highly recommended all around as it doesn't pinch the note or quash the attack as some compressors can do.

On my Stang3 I have a Bassman patch which is clean but then dirties up and adds a little sustain when a switch in the advanced compressor.

I have a digitech rp255 and I can't use it with the Mustang IV. There is no designated clean channel and it just makes random bad noises if plugged in. That is kinda annoying, but I got used to it. The biggest problem for me is, I do not a a wah pedal. I have one on my rp255, which I can't plug in. So now I'm stuck without a wah, I'll have to look into getting a crybaby. I had tryed my friends out once, kept it for a while and really liked it.
I do use the MS4 foot switch that came with the amp though. It is the 4-button, and it works great for me! I will, though, look into getting the 2-button foot switch as well. If you plug both in, you get a 6-button foot switch, which would add a lot, like have a stomp box to turn on/off the reverb.
I do like the amp, it's just a shame that I can't use my pedals with it.

I use the Ernie Ball wah, in front of my Mustang III (i.e. not in the send/return loop) and it works perfectly. Recently got my MIII, so I'm still experimenting. Going to try out the Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive (my favorite pedal) tonight, which I use in front of my tube amps, and see what happens with (say) a clean Bassman '59. Stay tuned!

Hey! larry_lion, thanks, I was just going to google if you could use a wah pedal without going through the effects loop outlet jack. I'm really glad you cleared that up for me! :D

Izzy, try what I suggested earlier: plug the output from your pedals into the stereo Aux input (the mini 1/8" jack) on the Mustang. It bypasses all the effects and amp modeling, so it's as close as you'll come the getting a clean channel. I did this with my Vox Tonelab LE and it sounds great.

Guys

The front end of this amp (i.e.) where the guitar cable goes in, is ANALOG. Anything in front of the amp will work - pedals, FX, wah. Pick a CLEAN Mustang model, from one of the factory presets, plug in your pedal chain in front, and it works. I like a '59 Bassman with top boost, I connected my Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive in front, and it worked like a charm. The amp just sees it as a treble boosted guitar input. Not sure about the send-return circuit, though.

Cheers

I use a bunch of fuzzes/dists, none of which it takes very well, a Line6 M9, a Digitech Sytn Wah, and most recently a POG. The POG seems a bit too much for the front end of the amp, it almost always distorts.

I just got my Mustang V for my birthday and was wondering the same about using pedals in front of the amp. As there is no bypass switch to switch off the effects, how does that work? I have a pedal board with a Boss Metal core to a Boss Flanger to a Kirk Hammet Wah. I like the Wah I get from the pedal versus the touch wah setting better. I play mostly hard rock, blues and of course metal. It'd be a shame if I couldnt use my pedal train in front of such a fine amp. 8)

Guys

ANY pedal works in front of the Mustang. I dunno how you folks use pedals, but if I am using a pedal chain, I run into a clean amp and let the pedals do the work. Same for the Mustang. If you are adding effects on top of effects (i.e using the amp's FX on top of a pedal chain), well, I can see how that would sound weird!

Pick a clean amp setting, plug your guitar into the pedal chain and the output from the pedal chain into the front of the amp. Bingo. The front of the Mustang is ANALOG, not digital.

The send-return loop is a different kettle of fish, and I admit I have not played around with it, except to plug in my Ernie Ball Volume Pedal, which works just fine.

You can also disable speaker cabinet modeling in the advanced amp settings (click the amp button twice) -- this has helped me with pedals, at times.

So, in newbie language, what you're saying is that I can use any pedal/multi-effect pedal and plug it in normally WHILE using a normal amp setup (i.e. '59 Bassman, '65 Deluxe, etc) with NO EFFECTS on to it (let it be compression, delay, etc) and it will work just fine? :o
