Hi there,

I'm just thinking to learn guitar; I like bluesy sort of styles and the guys at the local store were really helpful and found me a guitar I really like.

I was thinking to buy a Mustang I or II as my first amp. Do you guys think it would be suitable?

I did a bit of googling, and found a comment on some forums where a guy said he thought the II sounded better than the I. But maybe that was because he was playing it louder? It seems like the II would give me more "futureproofing", but I worry that it would be too loud just for bedroom practice. Will the Mustang II sound ok even if I turn it right down low, so as not to disturb the neighbours?

I'm a bit embarrassed to ask these questions at the guitar store as they don't sell this model and I'll have to buy it mail order. Since I don't know anything about guitars or amps I'm kinda afraid that they'll think I've "fallen for the marketing", but I've read some really positive comments about the Mustangs and I also like that you can upload different amp presets and the interface. It seems like it would be useful for practice to have some of the features of the G-Dec, but it's just wrong to have an LCD display in an amp!

Thanks for any advice,

Stroller.

You can't go wrong with any of them, although I thing that Mustang I might be better for you. I have one and it is perfect for home practice. I also have small vox da5 which has a power switch where you can select from 0.5, 1.5 and 5W, and I keep it on 0.5W all the time. Mustang II might be a bit too loud for bedroom practice. It should sound very nice on low volumes too, but it might be difficult to select the volume level when acceptable volume for bedroom practice falls somewhere between 0 and 1 on master volume :)
I never tried Mustang II but it is expected that it should sound a bit better than M I, just because if larger speaker.

I would go with the Mustang II...for me, the best way to learn is to jam with other people like yourself. and the II model will allow you to hear yourself in a drummer situation.. 2 cents worth of opinion...:):)

I think the Mustang I would work fine...but it gets loud, too!

However, if you really want to "future-proof", you might consider the Mustang III...even with the LCD screen. The upgraded speaker makes a big difference, plus there are more controls on the amp itself. You would want to try one in the store first to make sure you can keep the volume down.

I bought the Mustang I because I have two other full-sized amps, and wanted something I would mostly use with headphones. If that weren't the case, I would have gotten the III.

Mustang III is fine for bedroom level. It can be played quite low and still sounds fine.

I have a IV and the low volumes on it sound very good. I much prefer the sound of a 12" speaker, which the II has, over an 8" speaker. I was just playing my IV this morning before coming to work, while my wife was sleeping. Nice a quiet so I didn't wake her up, but it sounded great to my ear. You can always plug in headphones or earbuds.

I'm a new electric player and I'm really happy with the Mustang 1. Why buy one amp sound when you can have many? Plus it's nice when you hook up fuse and can see exactly what sort of effects went into making the sound of the presets. It's nice not having to get pedals.

I don't see how you can go wrong with a Mustang for practice as a new player. It's cheap, sounds good and it's easy to use.

Thanks for the advice guys, this is what I'm thinking. One of my neighbors is a bit inconsiderate already with their music, anyway, so I probably don't have to be that quiet.

Incidentally, I was looking over the manuals for the Mustang I & II and I see that the 24 presets are the same 8 emulated amps, 3 times.

I assume that the green and red LED settings for the '57 Deluxe are different from the '57 Deluxe on the orange LED. So I assume these defaults are each the same virtual amp / cabinet, but with different reverb &/or echo settings.

Can any one confirm, please, that you can upload 24 completely different virtual amps to the Mustangs?

Does anyone know how many different amplifiers are available as presets in the FUSE software or as official downloads?
(not user-contributed ones, which may be of variable quality).

The only thing that could possibly tempt me to an amp with an LCD is the Blues model of the G-Dec. It looks like that might have about 30 different amps as presets - it would be nice to have a few of those on the Mustang, even if they couldn't all be loaded simultaneously.

Yes, there are basically 3 variations of each of the 8 different amp models...different gain levels, tone settings, and effects.

But with FUSE, you can do it however you want...you could do 24 variations of the same amp model if you like.

Also, the Mustang I and II amps come with 8 models in the amps, but once you hook up to FUSE, you have access to 12 amp models. So then you can pick and choose the ones you like and save up to 24 different presets (you can write over all the presets that come from the factory using FUSE).

I'm not sure what you are asking about 24 virtual amps. As I said, there are 12 different amp models available, but you can save 24 completely different presets using those 12 amp models.

There are a whole pile of presets available through FUSE, but personally I haven't tried any of them or even really looked at them...maybe someone else can answer that better.

I was using the term "virtual amp" to mean "amp model".

Sorry for the confusion - I'm not up with the terminology yet.

8 different amp models defalt on Mustang I/II:

* A = Metal 2000 (speculated to be the Peavy 5150)
* B = Super-Sonic (Fender)
* C = American '90s (speculated to be the Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier)
* D = British '80s (speculated to be the Marshall JCM800)
* E = British '60s (speculated to be the Vox AC30)
* F = '65 Twin Reverb (Fender)
* G = '59 Bassman (Fender)
* H = '57 Deluxe (Fender)

And 3 banks: Amber, Green, Red.

From the amp, you can only write your own personal settings to the Green and Red banks - not the Amber bank. But any amp model can be written to any slot BUT if you do swap amps around - the names beside the LEDs will only mean anything on the Amber bank.

Now if you connect to FUSE, you get:

Additional FX, advanced amp settings, speaker cab choice, the ability to backup the amps settings, unlimited preset storage (well, limited to hard disk space) and much more... You also have access to 4 additional amp models available on Mustang III-V amps:

* '57 Champ (Fender)
* '65 Deluxe Reverb (Fender)
* '65 Princeton Reverb (Fender)
* British '70s (Marshall Plexi)

All Mustang I/II/III/IV/V presets are compatible with each other and can be used on any of the amps.

From FUSE, you can write any preset to any slot on the amp - including the Amber slots.
