I emailed Fender about this.

My question:

I just bought a Mustang IV and I want to hook up a volume pedal in the FX loop. I have several high impedance pedals that don't seem to work very well. The volume increases gradually, but all of a sudden there is a major jump in volume, so I quit using it.

I am assuming I need to use a low impedance stereo pedal? How low? I have seen 250K and 25K pedals.

Will a low impedance mono pedal work if I use connector cables from the 1/4" cable to the FX loop. (female 1/4" to two male 1/4") I know I won't get the true stereo sound, just wondering if it will work.

Fender's response:

Honestly we do not know, we did not intend for the amp to be used in that fashion so we never ran any test to see what would be compatible.

I plan on buying a low impedance (25K) volume pedal and try it out.

You are correct! I studied this religiously! You need the 25k active mono volume pedal for running in your effects loop to control the overall volume, i.e. another master volume basically.

You're sound was degraded with the high impedance pedals because the effects loop is a series, buffered loop for low impedance pedals. Any pedal with true bypass should theoretically work with it fine. It will only get you the mono sound and control one side of the amp. I'm getting the Boss FH-500L for my effects loop. It is stereo and low impedance and has a minimum volume control on it. I find playing live, the patches I created, some volumes levels are different and the volume pedal would be of great use than going back to the amp in the middle of a solo to adjust the volume!

If you run the volume pedal through the front of the amp, you can use a 250k mono high impedance pedal but will only control one side of the amp again. Running this way makes the volume act like the volume control on your guitar.

Check out the Ernie Ball Jr. 25k active mono volume pedal for effects loop or Boss FH500H for going in front of your amp. Or, you just get the same as me the FH500L and go in stereo in effects loop. More cables to hookup but worth it for overall volume control.

Hope I helped explain it but you are on the right track!

Post subject: Mustang IV: Buffered vs Non-buffered effects loop questionPosted: Thu Mar 10, 2011 3:05 am

Hi all. New to the forum. Maybe this has been answered before but I did not find anything searching. I want to get a volume pedal to run in the effects loop of my M IV. Jeremy at Fender, said I needed a stereo volume pedal to be able to fully control both sides effectively and that a mono pedal would only control one side (since the amp is in stereo) Makes sense. Even the advanced manual says the same thing about the effects loop. However, to determine which pedal I need, (high or low impedance) I have to determine which kind of effects loop is on the amp. Jeremy reports that RND has not released the schematics for the new amps yet so he was not able to tell me what kind of effects loop it is. If it is a buffered effects loop, I would need a low impedance stereo volume pedal. If it is a non-buffered or line level loop, I would need the high impedance one. Does anyone know what effects loop is on the M IV and which stereo volume pedal I would need. I just don't want to go and buy one, find out it's the wrong one, send it back and wait for the other to arrive. The closest music store to me is an hour away and I found out they only have mono pedals in stock. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Fender for a wonderful amp! Going to download the new firmware right away!

Thanks for the info! I am leaning toward the Boss FV-500L Stereo Volume Pedal.

I wished that Dunlop made a low Z pedal. I have the Dunlop DVP1 and I love it over the Ernie Ball Jr. and the Boss FV-500H volume pedals that I have. It feels much better on swells and allows for some space to swell into the note, unlike the Ernie Balls I have. The FV-500H that I have gives me too much room from heel until the note actually comes in. I'm hoping the FV-500L has more of a feel like the Dunop DVP1.

Thanks again for all of the info.

No problem. Glad I could help.

Cropmusik, the Morley sounds right up my alley with footswitchable lead control AND volume control but I want to be able to control the whole volume. As you may know, the Mustang IV has a stereo loop while yours is a mono loop. Unfortunately, they don't make the Morley in stereo :( I'll only be able to control one side of the amp with a mono.

I won't get one to run in front of the amp, I have my guitar volume for that. So for me it's running the extra cables and going with the Boss FV-550L I think. At least it does have a minimum volume control unlike the Ernie Balls!

I just said BALLS!!!! Cool!

Cheers

I just ordered a Boss FV-500L from Sweetwater. They matched MFs price. I can't wait to try it out.

I just got my Boss FV-500L volume pedal. I don't have it hooked up stereo. I have 2 cords hooked up from the pedal, to Y cords and into both sides on the FX loop. So I'm faking stereo. Right now I don't have 4 chords to hook it up true stereo, but it is working great and I really like it. One of the things I really like about this pedal is that it is passive and I don't need to power it up.

Other than this I think I will only begetting one more pedal, a wah. The wahs in the M4 are pretty much worthless and I do use a wah from time to time.
