I read a post of someone who used their Mustang at a gig and when the volume was above 5 it sounded like crap. I just got my IV and haven't played with a band yet. Is it working OK with a band? Loud enough? Good sound? Breaking through the other instruments?

I had my mustang IV on the metal 2000 preset with the master volume around 6 and it didnt sound very good , when palm muting it sounded horrible. I think the cleans sound better but I'm still learning how to adjust the settings. The amp seems plenty loud enough.

I've been using my Mustang II at gigs for a while now. With the wide range of songs that we do I play a Schecter A/E hollow-body electric a lot of the time (sorry, Fender) and I use an A-B-Y box, running one side to my Fender Acoustasonic for the acoustic stuff and the other side to the Mustang II for the electric (usually overdriven) stuff. I'm not playing terribly loud since I mostly do smaller venues, but the amp has been perfect.

I've also got a complete Mustang V rig, but I haven't used it out gigging yet - wanna be able to crank that baby up when I do.

I've been gigging for awhile now with my Mustang III (3) and it's been great. I'm selling my Blackstar HT-60 and Fender CyberDeluxe since they're just gathering dust now in the garage. While I do love the tone of my Mustang, I did slot in an Eminence Cannabis Rex for the stock speaker - it seems to get better crunch tones now and has a little more sparkle to my ear.

As far as volume goes, I've been running between 4 and 5 onstage even though we mic everything up - no problems to my ear. I played a big corporate gig on Saturday night with my dance/funk band for about 350 people at a local hotel banquet hall. On the last tune, I was out front with the singers and my amp was really louder than necessary, but boy it sounded good. I use a Twin Reverb patch with my JB Strat on the Chic songs we do and it pretty much nails the Nile Rodgers tone to a tee. My only complaint is the III looks a little dinky onstage - can't wait to get my Mustang V head (still on order) - it should look a little more dignified ;)

Mustang III ...over 5 on volume..I put a MRX 6 band EQ in the effects loop ...mellowed the whole thing out without even using it. then I used it to EQ the amp to the sound of the room. makes every setting useable.......

I've got a II and have used it at over a half dozen gigs - I use the clean Fender 57 Deluxe setting and dial back the preset effects (I've yet to hit save on the amp) run it at about 7 on the master - dial back my guitars volume (Reverend with P-90's) and it cleans up very nice. Turn the guitar up and it gives me a bit of dirt.

The band can get very loud so I mic the amp to keep it running with our drummer. I'm pretty pleased with the results. If you're going to play out . . mic'ing it is really a good idea - you don't need to run it full on for the amp or in the sound system to get a really sweet presence. It's an extra hassle perhaps, but I think well worth it.

I still use my pedal board for effects so I can turn them on and off for different parts of the songs we do - though I like the effects this has I can't think of too many songs that I'd want the effect on all the time - yes I could and probably will spend some time with a foot switch to create what I need, but it varies Chorus, Tremolo, Delay, etc for each song.

Took it to a 4 piece (two guitars) band practice for another band I used to play with and used the 60's British (Vox I assume) setting and It sat in the mix beautifully. This will be my amp for band practice - out?
It will depend on the club I suppose - The II has such a small footprint I can stack on our bass players amp to get more out to the crowd (if there is one  ) but certainly gives me more of a monitoring ability.
I've used a very nice (expensive 20 watt) amp for years, so 40 watts of SS is good for me 'YMMV'

Yes Mr. Bohn I do similar with my Mustang IV and a 10 band MXR! Works quite well! Sounds good but it will sound even better when I replace the speakers with Tonkerlites I imagine! Have gigged with it 3 times so far with master volume never above 5 and we ALWAYS mic our amps no matter where we are playing. Never had an issue not being loud enough so far and know I have plenty more volume available. Now to get a volume pedal as well to help control my different patch volume levels. That is the hardest thing I found is to get the patches close in sound as possible. A few fixes and added equipment will make this amp sing!

I'm gigging with my MIII tonight. I'm sitting at the bar on a break writing this post! I wasn't planning on gigging with it since I don't have all my presets dialed in but it was in the car so I hooked my GT10 to the FX return and set the GT10 to "Combo FX
Return". The GT10 NEVER sounded this good. I'm still amazed at how good this amp sounds in any situation. :D

Have fun on the gig and report back. Too bad you didn't have time to dial in a couple of presets to try tonight.

I really had fun on the gig last night. The thing is it FELT so good. I found my self feeling no urge for the fast ego licks. I really laid into each note. the mojo on this amp is really sweet. And this was only using the power amp and speaker! They must have really done something really special with the power amp because even bypassing the preamp it really felt like tubes. I just got my 4 switch foot controller so it will be a while until I have everything set up for the gig but I'll report back when I do.

It's blows me away that I've owned a Hot Rod Deluxe, Blues Jr. and Peavey Classic but I'm more exited about this amp than any of those. Weird.

Plenty loud for basic gigs - think Deluxe Reverb or Bandmaster for volume levels. Will need to be mic'd to balance with 4-12 bottoms. I play less "rock" these days and more jazz and accompaniment now so the combo size is perfect for that use and the 100 watts gives it massive headroom for medium venues.
If I was doing more traditional rock with guitars, bass, & drums I'd go for the Mustang V head and the 4-12 bottom - just to push more air. I suspect a 4-10 or 2-12 bottom with the Mustang III would be lease breaking loud, but the III didn't come as a head and most of us do wait at least a year before we intentionally void the warranty.
I'm not traveling much but if I did any more than I am I'd use a flight case for the unit, just for protection.
It's heavy enough that moving it could lead to some mishap.
I hope Fender does come out with a nice cover for it, the spare I had works, but doesn't look great - rather have a properly fitted one.

AS for build, the board and such appear to be close to mil-spec (think Panasonic Toughbook build) so aside from the knobs and such, it should do well - remember though, it isn't a Tweed Deluxe with 50 some parts.

Another great thing about the Mustang is that it has a 5 year warranty. One of the major selling points for me.
