Hi -

I just got my Fender Mustang IV over the weekend and LOVE IT! As far as using it with another modeler preamp, like the Line6 Pod HD 500 - what's the best way to connect this to the amp? My initial thought is simply connecting the unbalanced L/R outputs on the POD HD 500, set the switch on the HD 500 to line level and plug this right into the L/R Stereo Effects Return on the back of the amp. This way, I am bypassing the Fender modeling all-together and just using the power section of the amp. This sounded great to me and, to me, makes the amp more versatile because I can't see a need to use both modelers.

If I wanted to use just the effects without the models in my Pod HD 500. Then I think the best way would be to connect a Y cable to the stereo FX send on the Pod HD 500 and 2 stereo unbalanced cables on the effects return. Does this make sense?

Anyone want to chime in who has this (or similar) setup?

That's a lot of multi effects you have going on there between the amp and the POD. At some point I bet you decide on just one or the other for simplicity. That's what I love about the Mustang: 1 amp, 1 wah pedal and jam on!

If it were me, I wouldn't want to have to be plugging and unplugging things every time I turned around and I would want to use good heavy cables to eliminate any chance of noise. So, I would set it up as an "either/or" situation using an A/B box such as the Boss AB-2.

I would plug the guitar into the A/B box's input.

A out would go to the amp's standard input.
B out would run to the Pod's input and then, from the Pod's line outs, into the amp's stereo fx returns.

This would switch between one modeler or the other while using the same power amp.

Wouldn't the plug going into the FX Return with nothing coming from the FX Send result in no sound from the amp?

That's what I was thinking too, when I read it; so, I came home and tried it with my Mustang III: powered off ME-25 going into FX return on the III results in blissful silence.

Some sort of looper instead, perhaps? (I can see that switching cables around would get old fast. For now I have just been playing around with my ME-25 in the III's effects loop, but at some point I can see myself trying it in front of the III and it would be nice to be able to switch things around with a few strategic foot presses.)

Sorry, I have a M II so I wasn't aware that the fx returns worked like that on Mustangs. The fx returns on my mixers do work the way I described so, I just assumed... incorrectly.

I'm thinking something like this would work (Pod can move in front of Mustang or into its effects loop):

or even this (can be rearranged as above, but now either Pod or Mustang amp can be bypassed):
