I am a bit new to this, but it seems that my Mustang III kills the on board sounds IF I have an effects RETURN cable plugged in. I thought that a send and return would not only play the 'direct' amp sound, but would enable some portion of this signal to be sent elsewhere for seperate processing.
If the remote device is turned off, but plugged in at the amp return, then there is no sound at all!

Any comments on this?

The Mustang III has a serial FX loop (as opposed to parallel). If you're unfamiliar with what this means, have a look at this article:

http://www.mackamps.com/effects-loop-article/

The thing to keep in mind here is that your entire signal goes through a serial FX loop. If nothing comes back, the power amp has no signal. So, if you set the level of your FX to 0, or have a digital FX turned off that doesn't have a true analog bypass, no signal is going through.

Ahh! Your reply explains everything. I didn't know there were two types of FX Loops. ( I hear they've got electricity now too!!).
Thanks Musicalciruitry.
