If you think the Mustang III is better - no or yes? If so a little or a lot better?

I have the MII but was thinking about trading it in for the III. I don't need the power - watts. And I don't need more preset spaces as 24 is fine for me.

But I was wondering if the tone was better on the III with the Celestion Speaker? And it looks like you can adjust all the setting from the amp, pretty much without using Fuse. I know fuse adds to the amps but I really like the idea of being able to set mids and reverb as well as effects levels at the amp without using a computer.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks
Tony

I can't speak to the tone difference.

However, your other points basically are right on the money as far as why I went with the III (I really could have got by with the I otherwise). For me, the more comprehensive on-amp controls and increased foot switch capability really were "a lot better", enough so to seal the deal on the III.

PITA

The Mustang III is EASILY $100 better in my opinion.

Tonewise, I believe that the III sounds far better especially at lower volumes. The ease of editing also gives you far more choices and allows you to see the exact settings on your tone. With the LCD screen you can do so much editing that you can't do on the II without Fuse. If you aren't planning on using Fuse a lot, the III is definitely worth it for being able to do all of the deep editing that you can't do on the II.

You also get the extra amp models. You not only have more presets, but the '57 Champ is a huge addition for me on the III.

The features are far better on the III.
The Tone is far better on the III.
The 2 Button footswitch is cool.
The LCD screen makes it SO much easier to edit tones.
The Mid and Reverb knobs are a huge plus. HUGE.
There is Not One thing that the II does better than the III.

I started with the II and bought a IV about a week ago. The stereo effect is nice, the 4-button switch is a must for the stage, as are the top panel edit functions. I gigged the IV twice this weekend. The first night I chose to bring the laptop "just in case", as I had previously gigged the II using Fuse as well. It was a disaster. My migrated patches did not translate well to the twin speaker setup. I couldn't get consistent volumes either.

So I went home and dove into the top panel functions. Figured it all out in about an hour. I gigged that night with a guitar, TU2, and the MIV and I gotta say it's a keeper.

We're opening for Joe Nichols this weekend and I'm takin' the IV. I expect it will get noticed.

I second everything in this list. I bought a II last fall and a "III" about six weeks ago - haven't had the II turned on since - the III just spoils you, it's so much better. I need to sell my II, but it's not worth even half the price I paid because a lot of those pups are getting dumped right now due to the III, IV and V.
I have a V on order I plan to gig with and will use my III for rehearsals and home use. I'm not too upset about the money I dumped on the II - I've spent way more money on tube amps that I don't play anymore either ;)

Of course, just for that, the III is better than II.
You can adjust your amp without Fuse.
I, II and I had I bought the IV

As many of us have pointed out, the Mustang series is very finicky about guitars and their pickups. My MII LOVES my 335 (Aslin-Dane clone), everything tends to sound like early EC, KT66-world/Beanotone, a GOOD thing. But my MIII sounds blah with the 335. No real snap or juice. Darkish, bland.

My MII HATES my RGX A2 (cold, digital-sounding), but it fares much better with my MIII.

My MIII LOVES my Dan U2. Don't remember what my MII thinks of it.

It's all over the map, depends on your axe.

That said, the MIII is the minimum for gigging. The LCD screen and extra tone knob are critical. And of course it has a much more defined and articulate low end with all that power and the beefier speaker.

I agree to a point. I have a couple of strats, a tele and a les paul style guitar.

My Tele has lower output pickups, so in order to sound the way that I like it, I have to create presets that have more gain than I would use with a humbucking guitar. My high output humbuckers sound awful when you have too much gain on some of the settings, so I have to dial it back a bit on the settings that I use for my les paul or my strat with humbuckers.

So, yes, many of the preset tones are made to fatten up single coils, and there are only a few tones that sound great on all of my guitars, and the ones that do, sound completely different with each guitar. That being said... I can CERTAINLY tweak the sounds on my Mustang III to make every one of my guitars sound really great. I have also been raising and lowering my pickups to get the right amount of tone and output from each guitar.

It can take a little tweaking, but totally worth it.

I sold a tube amp when I bought my Mustang III, and in order to make all of my guitars sound great in the tube amp, I had to mess with my pedals and the amount of gain, drive and eq. It was a similar process to what I do with the Mustang III, only on the III, I don't need pedals, and don't have to shell out extra money to get the sounds I want from each guitar.

All amps, modeling, traditional solid state, tubes, require adjustments to the settings for your guitars, playing style, and type of music. The Mustang III may be better for some, whereas the I or II are better for others. If you already have a lightweight single speaker tube amp, the Mustang I or II would make a great addition to your setup and not add much weight for gigging. Rig both amps for a stereo wet and a dry sound. Once you get to the Mustang III, do you want to carry the Mustang and a tube amp? Probably not, so the Mustang can "replace" the tube amp.

As far as I know all amps are also available on the lower watt models. You just have to use the software to create presets with them.

I agree with paztormike.
The III gives you more options and is worth it (they are on sale now in some March madness sales)
I was concerned at first it would be too loud but not now that I have had it for 2 weeks.
The Master Vol has a nice curve to it to keep it reasonable and some of the effects that can be created are soft in volume due to their type and the extra volume is handy on them.

Very happy with the range of tones on my III also in that it is closer in construction of speaker and cab for the clean tones I prefer which helps the emulation be more realistic in my opinion.
Hope that helps some....

The II is smaller and lighter weight than the III.
