Hi Folks,

Just wanted to suggest an idea. What if fuse was made to be midi controllable? then you could sync delays to tempo, and so forth but you could use any midi controller to switch patches or turn on and off pedal effects. Think of it you could use an fcb1010 to control all of the patches, get volume and wah pedals going simultaneously. Even use the pedals for other controls. Because the computer is only handling the switching and controler data there isn't much data so you could use a small net book hooked up to fuse without worrying about latency. You could even use the screen on the netbook to see the tuner easily from a distance.

I have no clue how hard or easy this would be I just think it would be great to be able to control all aspects of the amp we have now in real time.

Hi, dethpoi and welcome to the forum. I'm pretty new here too.

As to your idea, it sounds great to me, but I am probably an exception to the rule. If the original G-DEC line of amps proved anything it is that most guitarists are completely ignorant when it comes to MIDI and have no compulsion for enlightenment. So those features wouldn't be something the majority of users could grasp much less use - sadly.

While the MIDI spec is over 3 decades old, it is far from dead and it is used extensively by keyboardists, in audio/video recording and reproduction as well as for controlling things non-musical, such as lighting and moving scenery on stage and elsewhere - It is just completely foreign to most guitarists.

Seeing that Fender reduced the use of MIDI in the G-DEC 3 series and "dumbed down" the amp (IMO) to increase it's usefulness to the common guitarist, I think it is highly unlikely that Fender will do anything more with MIDI in it's amps or other guitar related products.

Just my 2 coppers...

dude

Thanks for the welcome p90sdude. I hear your point but the GDEC is really intended to be a bedroom practice amp. Not much point in switching or controlling needed there. The mustang from 3-5 is different for a different crowd who are more likely to want switching to integrate with other effects and gear. I may be alone in this but it does seem like a way of having a total set up that would be great for low cost. And a platform for the future. sell pedal effects, stomps to go with the amp. etc...

As a guitarist and electronic musician I have to echo the idea that guitarists don't care about MIDI. In fact, they hate it. They hate the extra costs for control pedals, they run screaming from any idea of programing, they are the original "analog kids."

Even today, there are few guitar controllers that can approach the synthesis that exists between MIDI and keyboards. MIDI is around because nothing has come along that is better - it works. But it never has been able to easily connect with the guitar world.

The best example I can show is about teaching. I had a software package that connected my computer to my keyboard via MIDI. It played the lesson, I could play back and it tracked my notes and I got immediate visual feedback on technique, etc. It would even write music I played on the keyboard. You could not do that with guitars.

Fender made a huge step just combining its didgeridoo amplifiers with a computer. To have added the MIDI interface and such might have pushed away the very users it was looking for.
