Has anyone plugged their Mustang V amp head into an alternate speaker cab other than the matching 4/10 cab? I like the idea of the small footprint of the Mustang head, but do NOT like the weight of the 4/10 cab.

What would be cool would be to match the M-V amp head up with a smaller speaker cab, like maybe a 1x15 or even a 2/10 equipped with a lightweight neo speakers.

I have played around with the Mustang III and was pretty happy overall, but I like the idea of a separate head/cab arrangement - just not the weight.

Any thoughts/experience with alternate lighter cabs for the Mustang V head?

you might want to look for a used Marshall 4x10 cab. I've owned one before. Very light. Celestion speakers. Can pick it up with one hand. Not much bass though. You'll have to rewire it for stereo though since it only has one jack.

I just bought a Mustang V and a Jet City 2x12 cab and they work together quite nicely.. As shadow!nightwing said, though, if you buy other brands consider the possibility that you may have to modify the cabinet. I ended up having to re-wire my cab and put a homemade plastic jack plate on it to work with the Mustang head.

I'm with you on not lugging around 4x12 cabs. That was my purpose in buying the 2x12 setup, too. My entire setup (head and cab) can fit in the trunk of my little early 90's Toyota Corolla and my 2x12 cab only weighs about 40 pounds (as opposed to a 4x12 that can weigh in at around 100 pounds). With a 2x12 it kicks out plenty of volume, too. I have no problem keeping up with a full band.

The biggest things you need to pay attention to when buying another brand, though, is just making sure you get a cab that isn't below the Mustang's minimum impedance of 8 ohms and that you make sure that it'll handle at least 150 watts.

I'm still waiting on my Mustang V head - backordered about a month now - but I'm planning on pairing it with a custom-built Bluesbreaker-type 2x12 cab loaded with a Eminence Governor and Cannabis Rex. I've got a Mustang III too that I've using with this 2x12 cab (in mono) and it really sounds great...can't wait to hear it in stereo!

For me, the 4x12 cab is a little much since the bands I play with always mic everything up. When I heard about the Mustang V head, I contacted a local cabinet builder, Ken Jones in Kernersville, NC, to build me a custom 2x12 stereo cab. Ken is kinda of a legend in the cab world - he builds the cabs for a lot of boutique builders - Germino, Reinhardt, Bitar - as well as tons of iso cabs for big-time touring acts.

We sat down to discuss it and I noticed a vintage JTM45 Bluesbreaker combo that he had just restored. I loved the look of it, so he built me a speaker cab to the same spec sans the slot for the amp. Same Marshall checked grille cloth and a late period Marshall logo - it's very cool.

On the back of the cab, he installed a special switching plate that has jacks for stereo (8 ohm a side) as well as mono (either 4 ohm parallel or 16 ohm series). Total cost was around $325 minus the speakers. High grade plywood, reinforced corners, thick rubber feet and high-grade tolex.

My point is, consider getting a custom cab so you can tweak just what you want. Another option to consider is the THD 2x12 cab - pretty expensive, but probably the best 2x12 cab I've ever heard.

I like the idea of keeping it "Fender" and going with a HD enclosure. I'm not seeing a 2x12 HRD, though. Are Hot Rod Deluxe 2/12 cabs available somewhere? The Fender site lists a 1x12 which I think I could be happy with, but it is only rated at 80 watts. I'm guessing that would NOT work with an amp that is 150 watts? Or would it?

It would definitely work - each "side" of the amp is only putting out 75 watts, so you would be fine. And using two separate enclosures, you could separate them for a greater stereo effect. ;)

Actually, running two separate enclosures, as great as that would sound, is not really what I had in mind. That would increase the amount of equipment to have to haul around, not to mention the added expense.

I'm looking at an option of running a single cab. Does that mean that with the 150 watt Mustang head, running a single speaker 80 watt cab would not work, and instead I would HAVE to be matched to a 2x? speaker cab set up? Or is it just that a single speaker would have to be at least 150 watts to handle the output of the amp head?

Sorry I sound so ignorant about amp/speaker match ups.

You would have to have a 2x something to run both sides of your amp. Without that you could only push 75 watts max, you'd lose half of your stereo image with your stereo effects, and you'd leave one of the two power amps in your head unused.
