Hi all, hope you can help. I'm currently saving for a mustang III or IV.

My dilema is, if I buy a mustang 3 I will also buy the 4 button footswitch, now the cost of this is only £50 short of buying the mustang 4 which includes the 4 button footswitch.

So which do I get??? You do seem to get a lot more for the small difference in price.

The amp will be used for home use, so does the Mustang 4 sound ok at home volumes??

Any info would be most helpfull.

Thanks in advance

Andy.

Sorry I forgot to add, no stores nearby have them in stock right now so I am unable to try out.

I had the same dilemma. When I played both the IV sounded better.

The IV is larger, heaver and more difficult to carry around, but the stereo sounds great.
The III may be a little less loud, but you will have to make adjustments in the volume on either to play in your house (or use headphones).

If you're ok with the size and weight, I would go with the IV. The III is way more portable.

Thanks for that Kevin. I'm not worried about the III being less loud as there's no way I could crank them up anyway. I think I'm leaning towards the IV, I've got a nice corner in my lounge at the ready he he!!

I would be more concerned about it being too loud. You can turn the amp down, but you lose some tone quality. It's easier to turn down a electronic amp than a tube amp.
The IV is loud, the III maybe a little less so.
There are a few other threads you may want to search for comparing the III & IV.

That's the only thing that really concerns me.

Oh! decisions, decisions, decisions.

You've tried both so do you have to make more adjustments on the IV than the III?

Don't get me wrong, I would be happy with the III btt the IV just seems such good value.

How sensative is the master volume, is it a nice gradual rise in volume or does it go to a 1000% before you turn it to number 2??

Sorry for being a pain.

You say that if you buy the III you want to get the 4 button switch. But, if you buy the IV I think you need to buy the 2 button switch. You need both the 4 and 2 button switches to get the best experience with the Mustang III and IV amps. So add the cost of the 2 button switch to a Mustang IV purchase. If you still think the IV is a better deal, especially since it is a stereo amp, why not go all the way an get the V? The V has a better stereo sound than the IV and does not cost much more than the IV.

I'd not considered adding the 2 button switch onto the IV. That's something to think about, maybe a later puchase. With regards to the V, I agree with what you say but I'm affraid that's a no no. I'd never get that past the wife

I've just found out that my local dealer is getting them in, in 2 - 3 weeks. Can't wait.

Nothing earth-shattering to add; I'm very happy with the III, it is way louder than I need (most of my time is spent with headphones on except for a very few occasions when I'm home alone and even then I can't crank it all the way up in my tiny office).

I would have been happy with the I if it had all the on-amp controls like the III/IV/V. The IV is sadly just too big, no place to put it around here. So for me, the III fit the bill even though I went for the extra 4 button foot switch as well. (I didn't even play the IV, even if it sounds better the size made it a non-starter for me.)

Honestly, I'd say the 4-button foot switch alone is plenty versatile, especially if the main function is for switching presets and/or effects between tracks while recording (for example). If you are playing live and/or want to switch presets/effects in the middle of a song, then you'd probably appreciate the extra foot switch so that you can have more dedicated buttons.

Thanks for that PITA. It is for home use only. I want the 4 button footswich purely to make selections easier, same as you. I'm sure the III would be enough, but I can't stop thinking that the IV is only £50 more than the III with the extra footswitch. (Just seems such good value) I do have the room in my lounge for the IV, so the only thing stopping me is the home volume issue.

This is why I was asking about the IV at home volumes. I was on the phone with my local dealers and he assures me that they are ok at low volumes. I'll see for myself soon as he says he is getting some in store in a few weeks.

Absolutely, I think all the amps in the Mustang series offer great value for their prices (even with their known weaknesses/limitations/flaws). So, whichever floats your boat the best is the right choice for you. I hope the volume works out for you, you'll get to really hear the stereo effects through the speakers!

I was trying clumsily to say that with the IV, you may not miss the 2-button foot switch all that much (at least I don't), since it's quite easy to cycle through the modes on the 4-button foot switch. This is indirectly a vote for the IV if you have the space and the extra ££ to accommodate it.

Even for playing live sets, I can easily imagine clustering and ordering presets around the banks (a few up/down, arranged around 10 banks) and in between songs, go up/down a bank, then a preset or two, then leave the foot switch in effects mode during the song to add/subtract on the fly, all of which can be done in only a few seconds. Changing presets within songs is a stronger argument (in my mind) for having the extra dedicated 2 buttons (but it is still somewhat limited, since it can reach only 2 quick access presets, can only move up/down by 1 preset at a time, and can only control 2 effects at a time--and it's comparatively a lot harder to change its mode, requiring some quick and precise fingers on the amp controls instead of a few jabs with the feet). OTOH, it probably looks cooler to have more gear and cables strewn around... 8)

I'm thinking of seperating my Mustang IV amp from the speakers. Building cabinets for each.

What did you end up doing andy23?
I'm asking because I'm currently in the exact same predicament as you are/we're in.

If you ended up buying the IV - how is it at low volumes in an apartment?

If your still looking, the m-3 with the 4 and 2 button switch is very good. The volume goes up gradually so you have perfect control over volume. I've been giging with it for a couple months now and so far I love it. It has a high learning curve for me anyway. I just got the 4 button switch and the posibilities are endless. Whatever you get I'm sure you will have a gas. peace.

Thanks for the quick reply davebols.
I haven't quite grasped the point of having both of the footswitches. I'm guessing the two button one is better in live situations when you want to switch between a standard clean and distorted sound.
Correct?

And can you have both pedals plugged in at the same time?
