OK - I do not know much about multitrack recording so here is my question - apologies it it is trivial for some of you.

Here is what I want to do:
1. import simple drum/bass loop into LIVE - as say Audio track 1.
2. play it back and record chord progression on top of it as track 2
3. play track 1 and 2 together and record melody on top of it as track 3.

So OK - letsay we use Fender ASIO driver. Is there a way to monitor what you are doing using Mustang - ie. here playback of track 1 and track 2 that is currently recorded using Mustang? Is there a way to prevent playback of track 1 from being added to track 2 currently recorded from the amp? If not then how does one monitor?

Is there a simple tutorial that addressees such problem? I mean Ableton is great etc but really all I want to do is put a few tracks together and not create a symphony.

OK - I had some success - previously I could not get output in ASIO configuration wizard to go to built in soundcard and input to come from Mustang. I was getting same problem as many people on this forum - yellow key and silly error message "Computers hate you" (who approves such software???). I ended up using my old Audigy ZS 2 card. Installed drivers - ignored warning from M$. And now it works - I can split input to come from Mustang and output to go to Audigy. Moreover somehow I managed to set monitoring to work on Mustang - I run output from Audigy to AUX on Mustang, set output from both tracks to Master.
I also tried couple other solutions - Audacity is not usable without ASIO - latency from MME/DirectX driver is to great. Wavosaurus - I could not figure out how to record and play back in the same time. And did not want to pay extra cash for Reaper. I guess one more option is to find old copy of Traction3 - it seemed less bloated than Ableton and there was no limitation for number of tracks.

You can use Reaper for 30 days and it's uncrippled, everything works.

And the license is only 40 bucks if you decide you like it and want to keep using it. You won't find another DAW with the same features for that price.

Thanks for recommendation. Maybe I should give it another try. I installed it and UI seemed confusing so I tried Ableton again with Audigy card. Do you know if Reaper can be used on several computers?

Thanks! I was wrong - I had Traction2 - tried it today and yeah - that is one user-friendly recording software. So I think I will grab Traction3 - cheaper than Reaper and it does everything I need without huge install.

The Tracktion 3 bundle for $14.95 is a great deal as it comes with:

AmpliTube 1.0 Live Free
CronoX 3 Lite
Kontakt Player 2
LinPlug RM IV Lite
SampleTank 2 SE

I have the Tracktion 3 bundle and paid considerably more for it. T3 is indeed easier to get started with. But having said that, I now use REAPER.

The reason being is that while T3 is easier to use in the beginning, it's limitations soon become evident in that it lacks a main mixing section - which makes mixdown more of a hassle.

Another thing is that the T3 install is larger than you think as it has several MB of samples that are installed with it.

REAPER, while a bit daunting at first, is much more flexible and powerful and well worth the price. It also has a very friendly user support forum and a ton of videos to help you do what you want.

I'm just sayin'...

dude

Thanks for the comments - most of the time I just need to record one or two guitars with backup track. And just use Final Mix plugin from Mackie. That is just enough to document practice - without too much hassle. So Traction is pretty much the right tool. But I will take another look at Reaper.
