Assuming that all that I want Ableton to do is to act as multitrack recorder - possibly with ability to drop in MIDI tracks - is there a way to remove/uninstall some of the components?

The Ableton install does not take up much hard drive space. Considering that you can get additional internal and external drives for PCs and Macs for way less than $100.00, why is space an issue?

It just takes a 100 yrs to install
Another thing you might wanna look at is Audacity BETA version ... its good and dont use ASIO ..it just straight records from the Mustang`s USB... or another one ..that's ok as well.. is Wavosaur ..uses ASIO and its a teanie tiny sumfin like 264 Kb d/l... http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=47633&p=572350&hilit=wavosaur#p572350

I tried Audacity - without ASIO latency kills it - maybe I do not know what I am doing but could not get multitracks to synchronize correctly.

Hmm, well, I've only actually tried recording two times now..so I can't help you there..but I know by either increasing or decreasing the buffer, you will align the tracks better, but it could cause snaps, crackles and pops, depending.
