While I have really enjoyed my Mustang II, I found it to be a little heavy on the distorted and/or just weird presets. When I say weird, I mean a couple of presets that I could just not use in any way performing out. That said, I sat down with Fuse (thanks, Loren) and went through all 24 of the amp's presets and tweaked each and every one.

I cleaned up a couple of the wild metal presets, then adjusted volumes on all of them so I could move around without having to mess with Volume or Master controls, which meant lowering distortion presets and raising volume levels on most of the cleaner sounds.

When I have a little more time I think I will do a little G-DEC 3 Thirty voodoo on this amp, converting Green presets to all Clean, Yellow presets to good Blues tones and convert all the Red presets to drive and distortion tones. Just have to be careful when moving things around not to lose the work I've done so far.

Right now I am setting about doing some major tone work on my Mustang V - with 100 presets, it's going to take quite a bit longer, especially when I start substituting some of the tones I've downloaded from this site. Thanks to those of you who have uploaded some great tones.

And thanks, Fender, for the ability to make these amps sound just the way I want them to!

Sounds like you have been quite busy lately. I have a Mustang V head and have been doing the same thing. I play New Country, Blues, Jazz and West Coast Fusion ( a la Larry Carlton et. al.).

One thing that I think is missing on the Fuse patch site is the "type of pick up" used. It can make a HUGE difference if the patch was created for a single coil or a humbucker.

The only "non-Alpha" characters allowed on the 'tang V is ( ' ) and ( - ). So that leaves A to Z and a to z.

I have started useing a small "s" for my single coil patches and a small "h" for my humbucker patches. I place this as the last character in the patch. This way I quickly can recognize which I used in creating the patch.

Of course, you can (and should) notate this in the "comments" section of FUSE and place the words "Single Coil" or "Humbucker" in the TAGS section; but, that is more for use in FUSE and not much help when not connected to the PC.

If all of us who have an interest in "sharing" patches could come up with a "common" descriptor it would help everyone out.

Any interest?

Bo

That sounds good, Bo. When I updated the M II I didn't bother doing much of anything as far as descriptions, since there's no readout on that amp and the only way you can remember what you've done as you're scrolling through presets is to make yourself a list or memorize everything. Fender's labeled descriptions next to preset lights aren't any help once you start rearranging everything.

I hope to get started on the M V this weekend, so I'll bear in mind what you said when I start modifying and labeling my new presets. I don't think I'll be doing much uploading for a while, but when I do I will try to use similar labeling to yours, especially in Tags.etc. What about the brand of guitar or which pickup position, anything there or just go for S or H and keep it simple?

Good ideas.

I think that best left to the "additional info" area. There is such a wide difference in pickups. Just to see as you scroll through presets if it is "S" or "H" is a big help. Most, if not all, custom presets will need to be "tweeked" so each downloader can add their particular settings for switch placement, guitar, etc.

Blessings, Bo

I think it's certainly helpfull to know which guitar and which humbuckers a patch was set up with. Some users also add samples of their sounds by linking external pages. I started doing that, too. This might give other users an idea, how the patch was meant to sound and what kind of music it was made for. So if you like the sample, it's easier to adjust your guitar or your fuse setting, the way your playing (strong or soft attack etc.), what your playing and so on.

I've got a lot of guitars and I seldom use the same guitar each time I sit down at my Mustangs. I don't think single coils vary as much in their sound as humbuckers do and for single coil sounds I'm usually on a Fender. I've got mostly SSH Strats, HH Custom Tele, SSH Peaveys, then a whole raft of HH guitars, from 70s Electras and Yamahas to Floyd Rose, Schecter & more. And darned if there isn't quite a range of tones coming from one guitar to another. I guess when it comes to modifying and uploading tones I'll try to stick to common guitars and note them.

I sure wish I had more time...

A trick I learned somewhere on this forum was to set up my red, green, and amber banks for whatever guitar I want to use. So my Strat gets green, my Tele gets amber, and my Epi Wilshire (loudest damn pickups EVER!) RED. That way no matter what guitar I grab, I can have a pretty consistent core sound with no real surprises.

Although this doesn't truly address the OP about proper labelling, it does make it easier to switch guitars.
