I just purchased a Mustang IV amp and I love it. I was wondering what the recommendation is for getting the Mustang linked up to the sound board/mixer.

I prefer not to use a mic since I want to use the Mustang IV's stereo effects. I know I can use the headphone jack, but that mutes the speakers. I want the speakers to be active.

Can I just use the L and R fx send connections into DI boxes (or just use guitar cables) then into the sound board? Will I capture all of the effects and is the signal in the correct format?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. :?:

I wondered this my self..

As I understand it the FX loop is placed between the pre amp (sims/effects) and the power amp..

So if you were to come out of the effects loop into another power amp, then it should work.. But I have not heard any confirmation on this.

Its one of the only gripes I have with the amp really, hard to pick at it with the price, but a line out would have really put the icing on the cake..

Yep...I agree, a direct line out would have been ideal.

Has anybody use the effects loop as a psuedo direct out?

Hey Guys,

The FX send is a pre-amplifier line level output. This, in effect, is a line output. You can turn the Master volume down and send the signal out of the FX send straight to your mixing board or any other line level input source. At that point, the Gain and Volume controls on the amp control the level send out of the FX send. I hope that helps.

Loren,

Thanks for the quick response. I was hoping that the fx sends would function as a direct out. Now I know for sure.

Kudos to Fender for the great amp!

Sorry Loren, I'm confused now. I get that the FX send IS a line out, same as my Devilles. Gain and Volume controls affect whatever comes from the send. Why do I need to turn down the MASTER, and won't that affect my guitar speaker output? Or are you just saying I can monitor my amp as loud or soft as I want?

I tested this out last night. Basically, all of the knobs on the amp effect the fx loop except the master volume. The preset volume knob affects how loud the signal is coming out of the send loop. The master volume only affects the speakers on the amp so you can turn the master volume all the way down or crank it loud and it doesn't affect the signal going to the sound board.

Hope that helps.

Is the connection from the fx send to the mixing board done with speaker cable or instrument cable?

Use Guitar cable for short runs to a line in on your board or to a DI box if converting to xlr.

I only mentioned turning the Master volume down so you could see that the line out signal isn't affected by it. Some people like to send the amp's signal to a PA and kill the amp volume, some like to use the amp to monitor.

Also, you can use either speaker cables or instrument cables but speaker cables aren't shielded so they may introduce noise into the signal.

Yes, speaker cable for connecting to speakers. Instrument cable for instruments and line level signals.

Speaker cable should never be used for instruments and line level signals, the wire is much heavier gage and there is no shielding on the cable, The heavier wire will effect the signal and the lack of shielding will introduce noise and radio signals.

Instrument cables should never be used to connect speakers. The thin wire can over heat and short, which very well could damage your equipment.

Just for clarification. I have the Mustang III with the mono series FX loop. So you are saying if I want to go into a mixing console (whether I'm recording or what to send a signal direct to front of house PA) I could take the FX send to the board (and never return it to the amp, right?
So in that case the internal speaker/cab won't be effected at all?
More importantly, is there cab emulation at that point? I mean, if I'm running the full patch out BEFORE power amp and REAL speaker cab, am I still getting the emulated cab to the board? If not and you don't have a Palmer cab/speaker sim or something it's probably going to sounds like garbage. But, because it's a modeler I would assume the cab emulation is already there?
I'm not a fan of the headphone connection -- mine is noisey, buzzy and was uninspiring. The tones through the power amp + speaker however are really sweet.
Good job Fender!
