Hi,
any chance to make a Mustang battery powered?
Sometimes I would like to play outside of my flat without electricity and I'm thinking about alternate power for my Mustang ... or unwillingly change it to something else.
Any ideas? ;)

You could probably rig up something with a car battery and transformer, not sure how long a charge would last though -- and it'd be heavy. Solar generator maybe (expensive)? I know for sure you won't be running it off disposable batteries if that's what you were thinking. Try googling "portable power supply" -- that'd be a good staring point.

Outside the options mentioned - and they about the only ones you can do without altering the amp it's self. To alter the amp you would need schematics and specs to do it without mucking it up unless you knew what you were doing.

However, you could do it by building a battery pack that uses lithium-ion rechargeable batteries - say something like 18650 cells (used for laptops) with enough cells to meet the required voltage/amperage draw then plop in a voltage regulator.

Since it's solid state, there is a power supply in the amp that takes the wall sockets electricity, passes it throuh a transformer (AC to DC voltage) > diode rectifying bridge > voltage regulator > outputs the new voltage to power the circuit board.

A switch would needed to select between the output of the built in PS or your battery pack/regulator mod.

If the amps power switch comes before the transformer (and it almost certainly does...) then it would be kind of funky turning it on and off since the amp power switch wouldn't do anything when the mod's switch drops the built-in PS's voltage - you's gotta to solve that problem yourself.

Hope your handy with a soldering iron... Did I mention that this would void your warranty?

Me has a Roland MicroCube for those occasions I need a portable amp. :P

PS: Yes, majority of this post was way too serious...

Hello guys, thank you all for interesting responses, especially the picture of lawnmover engine is very nice :D
Schumacher PP-2200 Portable Outdoor Power Unit costs only 64$, but it is 110V AC (needs some converter to 230V for Europe) and another 112$ for shipping to my country by USPS :(

p90sdude: Agree with you, schematics is necessary condition, but I've checked that and it is unreleased yet. I would like to avoid to buy another portable guitar amp, but looks like this should be a way too.

Hi Filo,
That's to bad that one doesn't have adjustable output ...(looks perfect but.. check your Mustang plug ..isin't it a U.K plug type ...or is it American type ?) I'd check eBay China ..since everything I buy from there, I always have to use an U.K to US adapter ..so I'm guessing they should list a similar portable unit made just for ur country type. Hey does the back of ur Mustang say 120 or 220 ? .. yeah stupid question ..just wondering.

Good Luck.

aLinux: My Mustang back says: Input Power 220~240V/ 50~60Hz.
Plug connector is a type G. Connector type and power converter are solvable issues, but the biggest problem for me is the postage costs - I don't want to spend 100$ for "batterizing", it is more than whole Mustang and approx. equal with Roland MicroCube or Marshall MG2FX :)
What do you mean "eBay China?" Yes, webpage eBay.cn exists, but there are only chinese characters - no chance for decrypting ;)

Thats the same plug types I use than.. G-Type ..but I'm in Canada so I'm on 110v ... Cool so Fender did make Amps in 220v ...i thought so...but it would have been better to make them switchable power supplys ..for both 110/220 then you'd be good to go ..cept for the shipping ..and yeah its in Chinese ..but i manage ... I run it thru Google trans then I search for stuff that doesn't always turn up on my local .ca or .com eBays. Its just everything is made in China just about ..so I thought you'd have easier shipping cost be able to find it there .. I'll check myself... and post lnk if there is anything. Good luck.

Edited:
I can't find not even one ... there's lots 110/120v but no 220/230v. I searched for these terms .. "Portable Power {Unit,Station,Pack}" .. maybe try Generator or something else ..there has to be something...yeah, perhaps solar (o:

Hi There...

I put a portable AC power system together a couple of years ago and it worked very well for busking and playing at outdoor parties, etc. I paired a battery booster/jump start pack with an AC inverter with total cost under $100. The booster pack I chose had a cigarette lighter/aux power socket and a simple display showing battery level and recharge status. I secured the AC inverter to the back of the booster pack with pliobond adhesive [contact cement] fed 12v DC to the inverter via the aux socket on the booster pack via a aux power plug. These booster packs have a built in handle which the system easy to carry. Lastly, I could top on the charge on the booster pack by plugging it into the cig/aux socket in my car on my way to the event.

The Mustang II power requirements are 110 watts at 120v - pretty efficient given its 40 watts rms output. My inverter is rated at 400 watts, so powering the Mustang II would be no problem.

Hopes this helps.

Hello again,
I tried similar approach as jazzjourneyman, my results wasn't good.
Tested equipments:
external battery: nobrand APS 900 12V, 17Ah (about 60$)
invertors: Belkin 140W/230V, modified sinus (about 30$), CARSPA 300W/230V pure sinus (about 80$)

Belkin: audible sharp/rough hum already after Mustang switching on. Hum was increased rapidly when I plugged a guitar. Totally useless.
CARSPA: silent when I plugged a guitar, even on clean sound. But useless on presets with distorted sound, too much hum again.

Conclusion: From my point of view using of DC battery along with invertor is not a way to do Mustang portable.
