Wanting to use a MI into reaper, but from all I've read here, it seems more trouble than worth.

Do you have to use Amplitube with Abelton ?

Anyone having success recording direct with the Mustang ?

Ableton on its own or try Audacity Beta version (works best with mysoundscard) ..doesn't require an ASIO driver... or this one here does... but I get popping sounds with my soundscard..YMMV http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=47633&p=572350&hilit=wavosaur#p572350

I assume that you mean recording the Mustang in REAPER using the USB cable and the ASIO driver, correct?

Yes, there is a problem with doing that as your unable to monitor previously recorded tracks while laying down another guitar track.

However, I don't use the the Mustang's USB ASIO driver to input into REAPER. I use the Mustang's headphone output or mic the Mustang (I've done both) into a mixer that then runs to an I/O AD/DA interface with it's own ASIO driver. And yes, I am getting very satisfactory results with that method.

I only use the Mustang's USB to connect to FUSE.

---

You can set yourself up a mini studio of your own for $80 by getting one of these and one of these.

I actually use this setup on one comupter -tho not the in my studio.

Hook the RCA jacks from the USB interface to the mixer and send the main out of the mixer to a stereo amp/speakers and your all set... to setup your levels.

You'll have someplace to route the Mustang's headphone output as well as mic inputs if you wish to add vocals or mic an amp or acoustic guitar doing mic/side.

Not a whole lot of bread compared to the old days.

The ASI2KS driver worked best for me and is easy to setup with an icon in WIndows Control Panel (XP). I set it to:

Output format: 2 ch. 32000-48000 khz, 16 bits
Input format: 2 ch. 44100 khz, 16 bits
Samples: 12 ms
Blocks: 2/272

That's 24 milliseconds round trip latency

I get no dropout or pops and clicks. I actually had it set lower but Jamstix was giving me pains. If I render the Jamstix tracks and remove the plugin I can bring it down to 14 ms round trip latency.

---

I don't use Amplitube on the guitar (I use Ampeg SVX on bass though) as I know what I want before it goes in.

And as far as Abelton, you will have the same problem as with REAPER - You can't use 2 ASIO drivers at the same time.

dude

Thank you both immensely for the detailed responses.

Yes - I was hoping to use the MI instead of my tonelab st. The way the tonelab works is with asio4all & is recognized by reaper. No interfacing fuss & I monitor reaper tracks using the headphone out on the TLST. Easy-peasy. No latency issues or other anomalies.

I don't understand why the Mustangs can't work like this.

And while I do like what the tlst has been giving me, I would really like to capture some of the MI's tones in reaper. They sure sound great coming outta the amp.

Recording into Reaper is working great for me and I'm getting a pretty decent sound also.

Here's a sample if you want to hear it.

http://www.box.net/shared/sibgnygcst

The drums are a loop, the guitar part is my Peavey Genny EXP with a custom Clean Deluxe setting I made in Fuse and the 'bass' part is also my Peavey but with a Bassman amp with low gain and low treble.

I was using USB to record but my PC was struggling with it a bit (need more memory) so now I'm using headphone out on the amp to line in on the PC. I'm using the ASIO4all driver to help with latency and have line input set for the input in Reaper and have the output in Reaper set to speaker out which feeds from my PC to a small stereo I use for sound from my PC. You have activate the appropriate ins and outs in the ASIO.

I use Reaper and record with my Mustang I using Fender ASIO. I created a topic that covers using the Mustang to record using any DAW...http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=62673.

Sounds good man.

I've also had great success recording USB direct to my DAW. Sometimes, depending on the preset, it looses some mojo as its digitally processed. But I've discovered that with some minimal mastering skills I can produce some huge, sweet, tone.

My very first attemp at recording with Mustang USB was with Riffworks, the program i used with line6 stuffs. The recording quality sort out to be loewr than i expected and i understand there was a configuration preblem occurring.

I decided to switch to ableton and see how it worked. Seems to manage a bit better the Mustang USB. I discovered that the Fender ASIO tend to record both the amp signal and my notebook mic... have to switch off the audio card IN from the ASIO (so rule 1 is enable only input and output that you need). Also the mustang seems to be more sensible than the Toneport to the electrical interference, so i unplug the powersuppply and record with notebook in battery mode (but this is a fairly common trick when you record audio tracks!).

I route the PC headphone to the AUX in the mustang to use the mustang i itself as a monitor, and switch off the monitor for the recorded track to avoid feedback.

I tweak the tone to sound good with the headphones rather than with the Mustang speaker. If it sound good in your headphone, it sound good in the recording and in the speaker too (that goes for any modeling thing).

I did not get back to another recording software yet but this setup should work with any software now.

mordor74, good call tweaking your tone with headphones. Especially if you are using a lot of effects, it might sound great from the speaker but usually comes through a lot wetter when you record through USB.

My set up is pretty much the same as yours except I use Audacity to record.
Guitar to Mustang. USB to Computer. Audacity input set to Mustang Amp, output set to Speakers. Computer Speaker Line Out to Mustang Aux In, that way I can plug headphones into the Mustang and monitor while I record. Its basic, its simple, it gets good results.

a low amount of fx is always highly raccomended. I think that in my clip delay is already too much.

I've tried a lot of dofferent recording software, wish i could find one with really easy drum system since i am really dummy in drum composing. I am trying the "extract groove" function right now. I hope it will work for my needs.

Here is a track where I recorded a lead guitar using my Mustang I with LIVE to a friend's backing track http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11227081.

I used my 'beater' '98 AmStd Strat and the 'What The Heck' preset in my Mustang. I did tweak the EQ a little on the Mustang's track, and I used the 'Vintage Tape Mastering' plug-in on the master buss output.
