I bought a Mustang II about 2 months ago. It was kinda cool for what is was, but I never was blown away by the tones. Clean tones weren't bad, but the dirt tones just didn't do it for me. Compared to my trusty six year-old CyberDeluxe, the Mustang II wasn't even a horse race IMHO.

So I've been out to a few shops and tried the Mustang III - impressed enough to order a Mustang V head to use with a nice 2x12 cab I've got (now wired for stereo) . Well, I tried another Mustang III today at the shop where I ordered the head and just decided to buy the damn thing too - it just sounded great. Of course, driving home I'm starting to get worried - these things *always* sound better in the store...well not this time.

I get this beast home and fire up a patch that I loved at the store - "Aussie Rock". On my Mustang II it just a fuzzy mess, but on the Mustang III it just kills. I fired up FUSE and tweaked the Sag and Bias a bit, and now it sounds even better.

The Mustang III sounds so much better than the II, it's just crazy. The clean tones are so good that I sat there with my Tele and wasted an entire hour before I came out of my tone-induced trance (and I never changed the damn patch!). I never thought I would find a better amp than my CyberD, but it's just no match for this thing. I can't even imagine what this is going to sound like in stereo once I get my Mustang V.

I'm gigging with my funk band Friday night and I just might just use the MIII to see how it does live. Sorry to gush about this amp, but I'm just blown away. I've bought pedals that cost more than this... Nice job Fender!

Similar situation here, jonesing for an MIII now. Gigged my MII, just not enough umph for my tastes, and all Fender amps should really be "open-backed" IMHO. Now if they just had JBLs................

Awesome! Thanks for sharing.

I have an MI and it sounds too small in any space larger than a bedroom so I was thinking of an MII. The open back, included fs, 60w increase and better controls really are pushing me to spend the extra on the MIII.

Thanks for helping make a tough call.

What is the difference between the Mustang 2 and 3 other than amps? They look exactly the same otherwise? How would the tones be any different? I've been considering a Mustang, but I'm really confused right now. They don't even list the Mustang 2 vs 3 on their charts.

If the Mustang 3 sounds so much better tone wise, then I will probably opt with that. Must be a different speaker and modeling rom??

Edit: Found the individual product pages. Mustang 2 : "Special Design" speaker. Mustang 3: "Celestion"...

Mustang 2 - 24 amps, 24 effects
Mustang 3 - 12 amps, 37 effects

Looks like the Mustang 3 has less amps modeling but more effects?

Confused!!

@Pippers - The Mustang III is a 12" Celestion speaker, it has an open back (not closed like the MI & MII) so it gets a fuller sound, it is a 100W amp vs the 20/40 on the MI/II, it has support for the 4 button footswitch and includes the 2 button footswitch, support for an effects loop, it has more controls (mid, reverb, etc.) and an LCD display, memory storage for 100 onboard presets. Both amps have the same modeling, you can use presets from either amp on any of the Mustangs. Another major plus on the MIII is that with the extra controls and LCD interface you can control almost everything from the amp itself and don't need to use Fuse. The MIII is obviously a bit heavier, but should get an amazing sound.

I just swapped my MI for an MII and I can tell the difference is huge! I can only imagine what I'd get from the MIII.

Hello Everyone,
I just recently became a Mustang III owner and took it to a rehearsal the other night and must say I am totally impressed with this modeler. I have owned every modeler under the sun, both foot pedal and amp formats, except the infamous Axe-fx Ultra (maybe someday), and let me tell you that this jem just smokes'm. I also currently own the Line6 Hd500 and DT50 head rig which is pretty amazing in itself. But for the price, size, weight, and tone (absolutely great out of the box) this thing "ROCKS"! It so easy to tweak and at the rehearsal, it smoked a fender cybertwin and a line6 spyderIII. I have had it side by side with my tube amps,Marshall JVM410H and a '66 blackface deluxe reverb (original) and it clearly stands it's own. At the rehearsal the Mustang led the herd! This is quite the bargain package! :D

Since I started this thread, let me give a little update. I gigged with my Mustang III on Friday night with my (mostly) funk band at a local club (a little rock here and there too). They've got an incredible PA there (big place - holds 200 - 300 easy), so I knew it would be mic'd. I thought it might look a little dinky all by itself, so I took along a Marshall 2x12 cab just to set it on.

I used the 2-button switch (still waitin' on the 4-button on order), but that actually worked out fine. Beyond a TC Electronic PolyTune, my tele was straight into the amp. I ordered the presets with the songlist using Fuse (maybe 8 in all) and that was that...ran the Master at about 3.5 all night.

After the soundcheck, the soundguy was all over my Mustang - what is this thing? It sounds awesome...etc. After the first set, he came back and pretty much repeated everything he said the first time - he just loved the sound of it...

Giggin' live with an amp the first time is always a little nerve racking - an amp can sound great at home and rehearsal, but just crap in a club. I thought my Mustang did great though - there were some volume tweaks I need to make to some of the presets, but the tone was great. We play a pretty diverse set of material - from Chic to Prince to Benatar and back to some classic Motown stuff - and I was pretty happy with all the presets I put together.

My favorite was the preset for Benatar tune, we do the usual "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" - (women seem to love that song?) ;) I think Neil Geraldo had one of the best guitar tones of the 80s - kind of a jangly Strat overdrive with a touch of chorus and delay. Got pretty close with an 80s Marshall model (Sag full left and bias cranked about 3 o'clock) coupled with the Tri-Chorus & mono delay. I used a higher gain version of this preset for some Mother's Finest tunes and it was equally impressive.

For a cover band, this amp is a perfect fit. I have to admit, I don't always like all the tunes we play in this band (but it pays the best!), but at least I can sound good playing 'em... ;)

Hey tkdunn17,
I to like Pat Benatar and Neil Geraldo rocks in my book also. That overdriven, second position strat tone is what I go for quite often. Same kind of Steve Gains ala Ed King strat tones I really love and I can really get this out of my mustang III. I also mc my amp with a sennheiser 609 draped over the front and this little rig just sounds like a monster! Puff the Magic Mustang!

Thanks for this. My amp wont be near my PC a lot of the time, so I would definitely want the III. Don't need 100w, though. Sort of wish they'd put the full controls into a 20w version or something. Maybe I can trade down when they eventually do!

+1 for the Mustang III. I had, and I emphasize HAD, a Line 6 Spider IV and sold it after I heard the Mustang III and bought it. I love everything about it, the sound, the forums, the fuse forums. Kudos to Fender for this amp!!!

Picked up the Mustang III today. I don't know what to say, this is an amazing amp. I was worried about the 100w being too much for a bedroom, but the volume/master knobs adjust 100x better than all my previous amps. On my Vypyr 30 I had to get fiddle with it between 0 and 1 on the volume knob and it was so touchy from bedroom level to the neighbors are kicking down the front door! With this I'm between 4-5 depending on the gain and master. It doesn't ramp up as fast which is so so so SO much better for home use!

The downloadable presets, bloody brilliant. No seriously, I found tones I absolutely LOVE on there. I never really found any that I got along with on the Vypyr. I hope the honeymoon phase doesn't wear off. I'm really diggin' this amp!

(That 40 min UK YouTube review sealed the deal on it. Props to that guy for a 100% thorough review)

I am aso a new Mustang III owner, for about three weeks. I use it in my praise band at church.

The real beauty of this amp is not how great it sounds on the standard presets, but how much better it sounds after you adjust them to match your own guitar and playing style. This thing really shines!

I am having tons of fun creating new presets and downloading others from the web.
Every week it sounds better, and my "favorite" presets are always changing as I find new ways to tweak them.

Here are some of my favorites....

The 65 Deluxe, using settings i found on a web page taling about the "Magic 6" setup.
(Gain=6, Treble=6, Mid=3, Bass=2, Reverb=2) is awesome. With a little sine chorus and simple compression. I can go from clean to crunchy with just my guitar's volume control.

The Supersonic is an awesome amp model that is so versitile I am only beginning to dial it in the way I want.

The Basic British 60's and 80's amps are a good starting place, but the gain needs reduced. Play with SAG and Bias and you creat a whole new amp, too.

I love the 59 Bassman.

I could go on and on. And all for $299 US! IF you don't own one, go get it.
Only one gripe..... I wish they had included the 4 button footswitch. I ordered one from GC for $39 but it will be two months until it arrives! Moan!

Music 123 has the 4 button switch in stock and will beat the GC price and free shipping. Got mine today it's on the way.

I really like the new, bigger, and better Mustangs, but everyone one here got the Mustang III! You guys should've gotten the Mustang IV! It is 5o watts more, has 2 speakers, and is only $100 more! Also, you can't use the ping pong delay on the mustang III. It won't bounce back and forth if you only have one speaker! I love that delay!
I would totally recommend getting a new Mustang, and the III is great, but I would suggest the IV. :)

@Nooner69, hey Nice name! Got the 69 going on! Haha!
You should buy the pedal from amazon, they have it for like $10 less.
Of course I have the mustang IV and am looking to get the 2-button footswitch, and they have that as well for only $30! :D
