What's your experience with using the Mustang II or III (by itself or with pedals) for high-gain stuff, hard rock, metal? I get the impression most praise is for cleans and slightly distorted.

How does it compare to the likes of Vypyr, Spider4, Cube XL, etc.?

It's not that great for high gain as higher gain tones can be fizzy through the speaker. I imagine the III is better. The Metal 2000 is a bit of a let down as it sounds like a Metal Zom peod hunds out of it. I think it's possibly my preference as I don't like those sorts of tones. However the American 90s is great, which is weird as even real Dual Recs, have that fizzy kind of thing going on.

The Metal 2000s seems to be based on a 6505, which is an amp I like but can also be fizzy. I really hope they fix it.

The UK80s is great with an Overdrive too, can get pretty high gain. The SuperSonic is also sort of high gain but the cab makes it too rounded off.

How does it compare to the likes of Vypyr, Spider4, Cube XL, etc.?: i have the mustang I and also have the vypyr 15 and 30w,i cannot tell you how the mustang II or III would compare to the vypyrs but i will give you my opinion on the mustang I vs vypyr 15,the vypyr is much louder than the MI when you compare these amps side by side but when the mustang is used with the fuse software you can tweak it to sound much better and for exsample if i add a compressor post gain i can turn up the level control on it to make the mustang much louder and then save the settings to my mustang amp(you cannot do this with the vypyr)also i can change to different cab models and save them to the mustang,i like the high gain tones better in my mustang because i get a smoother less harsh sounding distortion and the clean fender models are warmer than the ones on the vypyr,i would say the vypyr is a brighter sounding amp overall but it also sounds good with some tweaking,i would go to your local music store or a guitar center and try all the amps you want to compare the mustang too and then decide for youself.

Electric Mistress, Metalman: Did you try with external pedals or MFX units?

Metalman: Loudness isn't a big concern for me, but the actual tone. Checking in person is always good idea, but difficult to do where I am. Plus, it's much more meaningful after you've had a few days with an amp, particularly tweakable modeling amps.

mpr, I haven't tried it with any distortion pedals yet, only fuzz. I do have a couple of metal/high gain pedals, a Boss HM-2 and Barber Dirty Bomb. I'll go see how they fair.

Here we go. You should be able to hear when I step on the switch. Took some of the higher gain models on the amp too. My favourite high gain tones are nearly the Vox and JCM800 models with an Overdrive before them, but US90s is really nice too.

A lot of the models are very overpowering sadly, as is typical with a modeler.

Depends on the guitar and/or player. I find it blows any Peavey or Marshall away for sustain and feedback at low volume. Probably different when cranked.

I've had a Mustang II for a few months and have a Mustang V head on order at a local music store. When I went over to order it, I spent about 30 minutes trying out a Mustang III. I was never very impressed with the dirt tones on my Mustang II - not bad - just far weaker than the clean tones. Let me say, the Mustang III is a totally different animal - the crunch tones are far, far better than the II to my ear. One preset I really dug was "Aussie Rock" - kind of an AC/DC type tone that just sounded killer - cleaned up great when I turned down the guitar volume too. Another great preset on the newer models is "Fusion Lead" - a really thick, creamy overdrive that reminded me of a modern Santana lead tone.
After I demoed the III, the sales guy remarked how much "clearer" the III is than the I or II...I agree, much more articulate and "present". I can't wait to hear what those presets sound like in stereo on the V head :)

Thanks E-Mistress. Is it just the amp or with an external pedal? What's humming in the quiet moments? How did you record it?

Oh yeah ..I missed that .. just noticed now Electric Mistress added an MP3 recording .... Are any of those settings using just the Amp modeling ? .. like Metal 2000 ?? ...sounds mostly like you're clicking a distortion pedal.. or, you actually using a f/s for ur MII ?

I am not sure why everyone says the high gain amp models are not that great on the Mustang series. I have been able to dial in some great tones on the 80/90/2000 amp models. There is plenty of high gain goodness to be had here. A very versatile amp from clean to crunchy to rip your head off solo tones. Anything is possible with Fuse, the cabinets models really can affect tone so maybe it is is a matter of finding the right sim for your ears? I love the metal 2000 amps, has plenty of balls.

Yep i go thru them all and lvoe'em all. I hate doing the the treadmill here.. so il throw it on Metal 2000 + add the first phaser effect ..and before i know it 35 mins is gone .. The Mustang is not only best sounding Amp.. but it can help you get in better shape too lol

I have played pretty much every modeling amp know to man and I gotta admit I am really impressed with the Mustang series. Vypyr is a close second, then spider IV. Vox VT series does not impress me much, but I love the Tonelab. Any who I am hinging on getting the Mustang III as all I have no is the I for home use. Not sure how it would hold up at higher volumes as that was always where modelers would fail me in the past.
