a Mustang III?

I looked at the III at GC and I really like the idea that you can adjust all the settings - Mids, add effects, and sett all the effects levels right on the amp with the dials and lcd screen. I read the MIII owners manual and it appears that you can actually set everything right on the amp and not have to use the Fuse and the computer like you do for the II. Does anybody know if that is correct? If so that would make it great.

But REALLY I don't need 100 w of power. I don't need the 40 w Mustang II either, since I only play at home for myself. So is there a down side to having a 100 watt amp and playing it at really low sound settings?

What do you all think? Is there a something I haven't thought of on this idea? I feel like I could trade in my II or even sell it outright and not loose a whole lot of money.

My Mustang II sounds much better on certain models turned up to not very late night friendly volumes. The Metal 2000 model is very fizzy at "Bedroom" volumes but seems to sound better turned up. I remember my Vox modeler was like this. I think it's the speaker used. Supposedly the III is actually better at lower volume. That said I've been able to get some really nice tones out of the II at low volume. Unlike the Valvetronix.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. The II is a great amp, but I have to say that the III seems waaaaay more than $100 better.

I totally don't need the extra wattage, but you are right, the III sounds better at a low volume. Having a control for the Mid-range is worth the entire upgrade price to me. At low volumes, the Mustangs sound really good, but some of the presence and character of the tone goes down, and the Mid-range control brings that back.

Also the Celestion speaker in the III is clearer and much more crisp than the Fender speaker in the II.

The New Amp models are SO cool too. The '57 Champ is easily worth $100 for me. I love this amp. The 65 Deluxe Reverb sounds amazing, amazing.

The two button foot pedal is really a cool addition too. I would have paid $30-$40 for it just so that I could switch between presets in the middle of a song, hands free. (i don't gig, but some of the songs that I play around with do require me to switch settings, and to be able to hop back.)

The fact that the LCD screen and editing tools are all very intuitively built into this amp are worth $100 to me. It's kind of like having most of the editing capabilities of FUSE built into the amp already. (Of course, FUSE offers tons of other new sounds and editing capabilities too though.)

Plus, speaking only for myself, it's always difficult to be playing through the II, knowing that the III is out there waiting for me. :)

Guitar Center would probably offer you $90-100 for the II, and also give you 15% off of the III making the difference about $135ish. Or, you could sell the II on Craigslist for $150ish.

(btw. many people don't know this, but if you trade in at Guitar Center, they will usually give you about 15% off of anything. many times there is a coupon to get this deal on their site. I brought in a Bad Monkey pedal that I tried selling for $30 on craigslist and couldn't, traded it in for $10 at GC and they gave me 15% off of a $400 guitar last year.)

I agree with paztormike as he already touched on all of the points to upgrade. I sold my GDEC 3 to get the Mustang III as I wasn't using the backing tracks as much as I thought I would. The Celestion and open back of the III gives it a more open sound to me than the closed back of the GDEC. Don't let the 100 watt rating scare you off. I use mine for bedroom playing and it sounds great.

The II's speaker is a little dull and dark-sounding compared to the Celestion G12T-100 in the MIII. Though of course, Fender has added post-power stage EQ in the mix as well.

All reports suggest the MIII sounds better at both lower and higher volumes. And that's high praise since the MII sounds pretty awesome to begin with.
