Hello everyone! So basically I am pretty new to playing guitar. Ive fiddled with an acoustic a while ago, but never really did anything with it. Now as Ive grown a little, I want to exercise the creative part of my brain. Guitar appeals to me because... well because. So Im looking for decent entry level gear. I had decided upon a Yamaha Pacifica 112J and a Mustang 2. After demoing having a guy play at a store for me on both, the 2 is loud. I love it, but it sitting at 6 on master is way too loud for my bedroom/house. I dont know what kind of settings you would need for headphone use on the 2, but I have nice cans that I can pump noise out of. Headphones would be used about half the time Id say, so if the 2 wins over the 1 here, please let me know.

But I was interested in the 2 simply for the fact that it has a 1X12 over the 8" speaker of the 1. But the store I was at did not have a 1, so I didnt get to hear it at all. I did not happen to get a chance to hear the M2 at lower volumes, so I dont know how it would preform. So I am wondering, since Id like the option to bust out some loud sounds once in a while, this is mainly a bedroom amp, and will the 1 suffice. Money isnt a huge issue here, and I dont mind paying for the 2, but if there are no benefits to it for me, Id rather save the hundred dollars for something else. So...

Using headphones, for louder volumes, will the 1 suffice? Or will the 2 be better here
For bedroom use, will the 2 play well at lower volumes, or do you need to push it a bit to get quality?
As a total learned, should I just grab the 1 for now, and upgrade months or a year down the road to something better at a higher price point?

Thanks for reading!

Yes. Go for the 1 now, it's all you need. It gets pretty loud all by itself and will do fine for a bedroom practice amp. Sounds killer in phones as well. Definitely hook it up to FUSE and practice to the Jam Tracks in there. Playing to absolute time is critical for a player's development. Don't spend too much time playing songs to the rhythm in your head...it sucks. Your mind fakes it all the time to make you come out right. Subjective time is bad time.

Metronomes and band tracks will force you to learn to play to time, and then you'll be a vastly better player when playing with others. In fact, if you wank around at home to drums in your head, others may not even LET you play with them years later. I've fired lots of guys who couldn't play time.

The first question a jazz band leader asks about a guy is "can he play time?" Meaning, can that dude play tight so he drops right into the groove with others. If you can't, fahgedaboudit.

The MI is perfect for you.

M1 is perfect for home practice. It might not be loud enough to jam with drummer (unless he plays with brushes) but it sounds very nice at low volume....no...it sounds fantastic.
I never heard M2 live so I can't say anything about it, but I played with Cube60 (12" speaker, 60W) at home for a week and it was just too...strong and I couldn't get a decent clean tone out of it without disturbing my neighbours :)

I didn't like factory presets much (I prefer clean, Benson or Kenny Burrell type sounds) but that's where FUSE jumps in.

The headphones should sound the same and should have same volume on both models. (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

well, you can't go wrong with any of them (not a big help from me, eh?)

Haha not so much, but I do appreciate both of your guys posts. I am leaning towards the 1, and I will make sure to take a listen before purchase for sure, but I think the 1 will suffice for me. If anyone else wants to chime in, feel free! Always welcome to more opinions.

I mostly play the MII at low volume.. between 1-3.. sounds great. You dont need to crank these to the hill.. to get decent tone.

Yep, exaclty. I use many amps (all tubes and modelers) and the Mustang I is juste PERFECT for bedroom levels. And to me it sounds way better through the speaker when the master is raised above 5.

Go ahead with the I. You'll be allwright for at least a year.

Enjoy :)

Well, after much research, playing, forum reading, discussing on many forums and with many people, I finally have a clear cut decision. I do thank you all for the posts and words, but after reading about the 3, I have absolutely zero reason not to get it, other than "Its a little more expensive" and in this line of hobbies, that isnt really a good excuse. The differences between the 1/2 and the 3 are more than worth the 90 dollars extra. The simple fact that the LCD screen would make editing amps and effects a heck of a lot easier alone is worth it. Add in the Celestion, and that from everywhere I look, EVERYONE says the 3 sounds good across all levels of volume, my decision is made. Although for being a beginner, the speaker, the wattage, it isnt all necessary, but after seeing it, I am absolutely in love. And with the 1 and 2 I hum, and haw, and find reasons to go with one or the other, and with the 3, it feels right, and I have no fear of buyers remorse!

So thank you all for your help, and if anyone here is indecisive towards the 1 or 2, look at the 3! Its a beast, its laid out better imo, and would make for a friendlier less complicated amp.
