Just unboxed an MI and upon power-up there's an audible 'tck' sound.

Also, when I shut it off, there's an even louder *pop pop* noise.

Is this normal ?

This is a perfectly normal sound made by a speaker that has an electical current applied to it's terminals. The current causes the speaker cone to move.

Here is a little experiment you can do. Take 9 volt battery and tape a couple of wires and tape one to each of the batteries terminals. Touch to these wires to the terminals of any speaker - one to each terminal.

  • - If the speaker cone pushes out, the positive terminal of the battery is connected to the positive terminal of the speaker.
  • - If it pulls in, you have the positive terminal of the battery connected to the negative terminal of the speaker.

It will make a bit of a pop sound when the battery is connected but 9 volts won't hurt the speaker.

p90sdude - that's a good age-old way of making sure the polarity is right & I hear ya.

In this case (as is with my da5 & other budget ss amps) the pops may be due to a lack of a soft start component such as a resistor/capacitor/relay.

Regardless, I would rather have the missing components & pay the difference.

Thanks for chimin' in.
