To any Mustang owners that are using the foot swtich; I notice a very slight delay, or lag, when I switch presets. I have a Mustang II, but read a similar post from a Mustang III owner in a different forum.

It's more noticeable when I go from a clean twin setting to a distortion setting. It seems that for maybe a few milliseconds, it's not at full volume or something when I go from clean to dirty, and there is a small bit of a lag.

Anyone else notice this? Changing the channels is just not as immediate as when I use a footswitch on my other amps.

Thanks.

Hi timmat,

Can you verify that you're using the latest firmware installed? Version 1.6 is the latest for the I&II's.

Yes...latest firmware confirmed. I'm using the MII w the 1-button switch. Did read a similar post from a MIII user also.

Hi Timmat,

We've checked this out and have found a very slight delay when switching presets. It makes sense. This amp is pretty much entirely DSP-based. There would naturally be some processing time to complete a task. Have you noticed any delay or latency while you're playing?

No prob at all while playing within a channel. The drop is more of an issue if I'm playing clean, and switch to distortion, without much of a performance pause. Thx.

This is also present on the Mustang IV amp running the latest firmware when switching channels.

I hope this is something that can be addressed. It's a serious hinderence to using these for live performance when seemless channel switching is necessary and lag cannot be tolerated. Not such a big deal for sitting in the bedroom, which is what I use my MII for. But, I liked the tones so much, I was also considering the MIV for both the stereo effects, and live. But this is causing me to hold off, for now.

I hate to be a downer but I'd imagine it would require a new chip to make the switch faster. You can go from one setup to another with millions of different variables instantly. While processing the XML file is easy, actually loading will take time.

Fingers crossed though.

Looks like I'm coming into the conversation a few years late, but I experience this issue as well.

I'm in a cover band and switch from clean to distortion a lot. The lag is KILLING me. Last time we played live a few buddies of mine in the crowd even noticed it. I love the sound my Mustang IV produces and it has plenty of juice to play live, but this delay is getting to the point to where I'm going to have to sell this and go with another brand.

The last post was back in 2011. Has this ever been addressed?

There are some creative ways to semi work around the lag using volume control, etc. but it has been addressed as you are responding to over a five year old thread. <g>

Is it fixed? No. With DSP there will always be some noticeable lag I think. As a work around you could use an outboard distortion pedal; the Mustangs take them really well.

You should probably cross the 'Marshall Code' off your list. I was watching a demo where the player kept switching presets and the delay was as bad or worse from what I could hear.

It has been off my list for two major reasons. I think the *Stangs* Fender Twin and the Marshall JCM 800 when tweaked sound better than anything the CODE has to offer. With that said I have not heard the CODE up front and personal so my 2 cents is subjective at best because of the internet videos and the compression that is being used for video-graphic delivery. Fender does all of *their* amps pretty darn well and I am thinking the reason we haven't heard from Fender in awhile is because I still think the Stangs are still selling big time. A five year warranty isn't bad either and I believe they are built well for what they are and for the price you pay for all of its diversity.

Anything with a DSP need time to setup a different sound process. The more DSP power you have the more complex will be the setup. The main reason to have more DSP power is to process more data at the same time. So i guess that any modeling amp wil have similar delay while switch from a preset to another.

Probably it tooks more time to load a overdriven preset since che algo should be heavier.

The only solutions i see are:

1) use the stang with clean channels and an external stomp for the overdrive tones (i use a multistomp this way with success)

2) go back to a nonDSP amp

The Yamaha THR100 reacts darn near immediately, so clearly it's possible.

My guess is it's the Mustang's program design, where the different layers are switched out and in one by one, and to avoid bad-sounding transitions, a mute is added until the last one is complete and the pipeline full.

+1
Yes, the Yamaha THR100 reacts differently because it is a whole other animal. Very interesting design and I am impressed with it. Haven't tried one though,... yet.
