Hi Loren @ Fender,

You can read all this, just like the rest of us.
What's being done about it ?
Let us know, if something is being done about it.
It's not going to go away.
(It will, eventually, of course, when all the Mustang IIIs have been
returned and dead and buried).

Hi, Loren@Fender,

I too would like to know the status on this.

I have the MII (that no longer has the tail-end distortion because of the patch/fix) and now want to trade it up for the III (really bad!!!), yet I won't do this until I know Fender has resolved this problem with the III (i.e., I can't advance to the better while going back to lousy tail-end distortion {which I was so happy to have gotten rid of it!}).

Please share your thoughts and thanks for your reply in advance.

I just got a Mustang III yesterday via an online retailer and every sustained note has the fizz / distortion really bad. It sounds like an under-powered DSP similar to what i have heard in delay / looper units when they don't have enough voltage.

Does anyone know if there is a hardware fix for this or will i never be able to use a Mustang because of the electricity in my house?

[edit] ps. i applied the latest firmware last night and it made no difference.

[edit2] here is an audio example of what the digital aliasing sounds like:

Welcome to the "Club", polishbroadcast

What's the manufacturing-date of your Mustang? 02/2011? You should try to exchange it, maybe you are lucky and get a good one.

Today I returned the 4th (!) Mustang III, couldn't get one which didn't have that nasty noise (all were 02/2011). And I will not order a 5th one, I'm afraid the postman kills me if he has to carry another one to the 3rd floor without elevator

I think the time is not right yet to ride a Mustang III, going back to saddle my reliable One-Trick-Pony, the Blackstar HT5. That's quite hard, because the sound and the possibilities of the MIII are outstanding. But I cannot accept that noise that drives me mad everytime I let a note ring out :(

But what makes me quite dissapointed, even at the edge of getting angry, is that there is no statement from Fender regarding this issue. Loren is writing every day in the forum, but this thread seems to be completely ignored. Ok, they made a firmware-update that cured some of the Mustangs, but the people who still have the problem are left alone. A short "hold on people, we are working on it" or any other comment would have been nice. :?

Inside of the amp says 112010, so is that 11/2010? Ironically i sold my Princeton and Deluxe Reverb because i record at such a low volume i wanted to eliminate the noise. I never thought amp buzz would be preferable.

FWIW i called Fender today and was told they would email or call me back once talking to the lead software engineer on the team so hopefully i will have some kind of direction. I'm just trying to figure out if it is software or hardware related.

Both of the III's I tried were made in 112010. Returned them both. I did the 1.6.4 firmware upgrade to the second one. It didn't help. The "fizz" was unfazed. I continue to hope that new production units will not have this problem. When there is clarification that new units don't fizz, I'll buy one. Bob

Wow.. now I know what it is... I have a Mustang 4 the date is 012011... I'm in Canada...and definitely do NOT have that problem.. but for those who do... wow..take it back for sure...

Does anyone in North America have this problem ?? I'm kind of getting the vibe it's mostly on the Mustang 3's?

Just curious how did you record that, via USB, phones or mic'd?

My Mustang I stopped buzzing after firmware update.

mic / through the speaker. The headphone output doesnt have the problem.

I purchased my Mustang V head in late April and I did the firmware upgrade. Much of the time, I use headphones so my family can sleep and I never noticed a problem. However, when I plugged the ouput jack into the 1x12 cab that I have at home - and the family was not around, I did get the dreaded "obnoxious tail-end distortion" when playing chords or notes. This occurred when using my tele or my LP. It was particularly troubling when I tried to play on the Basic Deluxe model (preset 92), but it was evident in other basic models as well.

So, I called my local music store and asked if I bring in my equipment and try out my guitar, cable, and head on their speakers. Since I know these guys (and purchased the head from them and I have an interest in purchasing a cabinet) they had no problem with it. I knew within 10 seconds that the guitar, cable, and head sounded ABSOLUTELY FINE when playing through the Fender Mustang Cab or even an Eminence speaker system they had set up in the store. The tail-end hiss that swells up as the chord decays in my house was absent when playing through their rigs.

To me, this suggests that the Mustang series must be extremely sensitive to power / grounding / undervolt issues. I may have an electrical setup in the house that the M5 doesn't like, in which case I can try a 'clean power' device and see if that resolves the issue or maybe use a different power outlet or I may just get that speaker cabinet and see if the problem occurs with different speakers. Experiments will continue...

BillJ, I tried the first amp at home and it had the "fizz" there and at the store where purchased. The second amp fizzed at home and at my workplace. I did the update from 1.3 to 1.6.4 to the second amp at the workplace. I did try another speaker with the second amp while at home. It still fizzed with that speaker/cab setup. I have the appropriate jumpers and extensions to try other speakers without removing the factory speaker from the cabinet. I do think that the second amp fizzed worse than the first. I still think that the III is a great amp, at least it will be when this fizz business is solved. I prefer the clean models. The Fender models sound so darn good and so does the AC30 preset. I'm still excited about this amp. Bob
