I bought a Mustang II about six weeks ago and have enjoyed playing around with it, but I still played all my year-end gigs with my trusty CyberDeluxe I got back in '05. Combined with the Fender Footcontroller, my CyberD is just an amazing gigging amp - great amp tones, excellent effects and easily connects direct to the PA... My Mustang II is neat, but given all the limitations - mainly the lack of foot control and decent line outs, it can't touch my CyberDeluxe.

That said, I hit GC this morning to check for a Mustang III - and there it was. I fired it up with a nearby Mexican Tele and put it through it's paces. First off, there is a huge step up with the MIII from the MII (IMHO). It has a much more pronounced tone to it and has the presence and punch of my CyberDeluxe. The LCD panel is a fantastic upgrade and the presets on it are a *huge* improvement over the MII. If the MII and MIII had come out at the same time, I wouldn't have even thought about the MII - the tone is so much better on the MIII.

I'm still dying to check out the Mustang V, but I'll probably end up keeping my CyberDeluxe for gigging. While the tone of the MIII is far more varied and "tweakable" than my old amp, the lack of MIDI control is an issue (overall amp volume for one). I'm also not thrilled about the quality of some of the effects on the Mustang line - the chorus and autowah on my Cyber amp are just killer - Mustang, not so much.

This post is really not a dig at the Mustang line, it's more a question of "where's the rest of the product line?" The now discontinued CyberTwin SE had full midi control and *real* professional direct out options for recording and live applications. It's hard for me to believe that there's not a Mustang VI in the wings ready to address these major shortcomings. What major artist currently gigging with the CyberTwin SE (and there are several!) is going to go out with a Mustang IV and hand the PA guy a 1/8" stereo plug for the PA?

I guess I'm a little bummed because I really love Fender's technology in this area - it has made gigging a helluva a lot easier for me and given me the best live tone I've ever had (and I've owned a lot of tube amps!) - all with an amp (CyberDeluxe) that is six years behind the Mustang. I understand Fender is trying to keep the price low, but you're asking a lot for a veteran musician to gig with one of these pups. You spoiled us with CyberTwin and CyberDeluxe ;) So get workin' on that Mustang 6!, oops, VI :D

+1, that CD is one of the most under-rated amps of all time! 65 watts, 12", great EFX and tones, and midi-switchable.

Hey, check out the new MustangV Head. 150 watt 1/4 phone out (not XLR ughh!) Stereo EFX in/out and a 4 button (plus 2 more button option) for most of what you would do with MIDI!).

I still use some of my OD before the amp and some MOD in the effect return but it's got great tone with my 2X12 EV12M-L custom Cab.

Loving it - and I had an old Cyber-Twin for years.

Check it out!

Bo

Whoa, that's the first I'd heard of 1/4" jacks on the V - that's great news. I actually think I could live with the 4+2 footswitch config, but I will miss the volume and expression pedal on my Fender Footcontroller :( That said, I won't miss the switching delay between presets on the CyberD - that's my only real complaint with it. Appreciate the info BO - gotta go hunt down a V now. I've got a Marshall Bluesbreaker 2x12 cab that I just rewired for stereo - it's got an Eminence Cannabis Rex and an Eminence Governor in it - I think it will sound amazing with the Mustang... :D

I agree . .. it WILL sound amazing. Just to let you know that the EFX Send/Return is in stereo. So, I can use my G-Major effects rack and Rockatron MIDI pedal (with expression pedal option) to get all the MOD effects I'll ever need. A good dirt pedal in front and you are good to GO!

Also note that it is the V HEAD that has the 1/4 outs - not sure about the Combo amp.
