Hello everyone.

I just played a Mustang I that I bought for my son for Christmas. I love the tones. And... I am looking for a new amp for myself.

here is my question... Have any of you played both the Mustang and the Super Champ XD? Which would you choose and why?

I own both. The SCXD has been a great amp for me for the last two years or so and I just bought a Mustang I. The only real advantage I can see to the Mustang is the ability to load presets and record to the computer. That, and the price. If I had to chose one or the other at purchase time I would definitely go with the Mustang and save some money.

Dont forget the Fender G-Dec's  If you want everything in one little package the
G-Dec / SCXD are good options. If you can do without a few little things, The Mustang
def. comes to mind.

I own both the SCXD and the Mustang II. For the money and versatility, I would choose the Mustang II over the SCXD and Mustang I, especially for an at home hobbyist (like myself).

Mustang II: 12 inch speaker (SCXD and Mustang have smaller speakers and I think bigger sounds better). Headphone jack. More versatility vs. SCXD for adjusting amp and effects parameters (must use Fuse on PC to maximize adjustments). Access to user tones on-line.

SCXD: Tube hybrid. Has excellent tone and more "punch" I believe. No headphone jack :( I don't have the amp in front of me, but I don't think there is a Mid adjustment for EQ, just Treble and Base. 10 inch speaker.

I'm sure there's more to consider, but these are the items that come to mind.

I have the same "problem" in regard chosing between the two. I havent tested them out yet. The main reason i would go for the mustang is the fact that i can practice with the headphones. The walls of my room are very thin, sort of prefab style. It's a bummer that the super champ doens't come with a headphone.

Just found out my Dad's been testing out both the SCXD and MII for last 30 days. Says he's returning both...but enjoyed the MII more. He never attempted to install the Fender Fuse programs neither, so he missed out on that.

After starting this thread, I got something way different than what I thought I'd get. I figured that everyone was going to be a tone snob and tell me that the Tube amp is the way to go.

The more I think about it, the better off I might be with a Mustang II. I can plug in headphones or play it at low volumes whenever I want to. (I have 4 kids and usually only get time to play in the evenings due to work.)

I also love that it will cost considerably less.

Good idea. And even though the SCXD has a real Tube inside, you may find the Mustang
more tube-like sounding. I'm using the MII and at super low volume it sounds incredible
to me and super quiet at the same time. I have a Class A Tube Amp here as well that I
thought was 'it' but everytime I plug into the Mustang, it always sounds... more 'it'..

Good luck.

Regarding headphones for tube amps, seems like when I was looking for a small tube amp, almost all of the tube amps I looked at did not have headphone jacks. If I recall correctly, maybe the Bugera was the only tube amp to have a headphone jack. Too bad...

Sweet, quality hand-wired Amp(s). Can't beat the prices neither. They ain't no Hughs & Kettner but there def. worth every penny for boutique Amp lovers.

Have both. Ragin Cajun in the SCXD and Tung-Sols. Have had it over a year and used it home and gigging but mainly home. My BDRI was too loud for home but redently got a volume box so SCXD playing time had been going down. I use clean channels with my pedals.

Then got a Mustang II and playing time on SCXD is nil. The 12" speaker just does it for me. Again mainly clean channels with pedals but have dialed in so nice gainer channels on the Mustang also. Now when I plug into the SCXD it just sounds more boxy, the Bassman especially in the Mustang just has a fuller sound and using FUSE can really dial in some very nice tones.

SCXD may be going up for sale.

First timer here.

I've noticed that a lot of comments about these and other amps relate to speaker size. My question is: How would a Mustang I or II or any other small amp in this category sound with a 112 or 212 or 115 cabinet? Just as good as the bigger amps that come in bigger cabinets such as the SCXD or others?

I'm curious about how this applies to any small amp because I don't need big watts, just big sound, if that makes sense. The trouble with the smaller amps in this category for me is always that they come with small thin sounding speakers. So I would be happy to get a good inexpensive amp plus a good speaker cab if it has inherently good tone.

I am interested in these two but also would welcome any suggestions for other small amps that would sound good with bigger speakers.

Ron

I have to say that based on these forums and based on trying the Superchamp XD and the Mustang Amps I, II and III... I chose the III for myself.

I was looking for a full sound at a low volume, and the Mustang III was by far the best choice for me. The sound at high and low volume is really big and full, whereas the SuperChamp was thin at higher volumes and did not sound full to me at lower volumes (I think because it really was not driving the Tubes in any meaningful way.)

The Blues Jr. has such a great and full sound at a higher volume, but you just can't get it to sound ballsy at bedroom volumes.

After trying the Mustang I, I was blown away at the quality of the sound out of a small amp. The Mustang II was also impressive. But when the Mustang III came out, I was absolutely floored by the quality of the sound at all volumes. I've had the III for a couple of weeks now, and I love it more every time I play it. Everyday, I tweak it a bit and find a new sound that I love and play on that sound for a long time. I could literally post a list of the presets and sounds that I have created each day that I think to myself "I found the coolest new sound" and then the next day I find one that I like as well or more.

What a great amp for an amazing price.

So in other-words ... grab the III  But I've been wondering the same thing and I'll bet they sound really good into a 212 or better a 412 cab .. its doesn't matter if the cab is 16 ohm ..It will sound just as loud and full .. being these aren't real Tube Amps but I wish they had a convenient speaker-out on the back for doing so .. I don't even think the MIII and / IV have speaker outs neither.

I was able to demo the 2, 3, and 4 the other day, and my impression was exactly as paztormike described his. The 3 is quite a bit better sounding than the 2 with a different speaker and larger open cabinet. The user interface of the 3 is worth the extra $100 by itself, same for the sound. To me the 3 is the sweet spot for value. The 4 is great also, but just not worth $150 more to me personally.

What I like about any of these is that they all sound just as good quiet as they do loud. That's important to me.

HOWEVER, since all of them including the small $100 Mustang I have a line stereo output through the headphone bypassing the power amp section (stereo is for the effects), any of them could be transformed into giants with the addition of a simple flat response stereo amplifier and monitor/PA/FRFR speakers relatively inexpensively.
I'm going for the best of both worlds with the Mustang III and amp it later with a stereo setup.

Ron
